Hi all. This is my first post, but I've been lurking here for quite some time.

A new job has given me the ability to expand into long range shooting, so I am getting ready to buy/build my first rifle. I've got it down to two choices. The LMT MWS or putting a Remington 700 5R in an AICS 2.0 chassis (.308).

I'm drawn to the LMT because of the ability to swap out barrels/calibers (example start with a .260 Rem or 6.5 Creedmore and then get the .308 18" 5R barrel and bolt if needed). My local GS has a bunch in stock at a different store... so I could start out with any of those 3 (what is the difference with the .308 slick receiver BTW?).

But I also really would like to build a Rem 700 5R (in .308) w/ the AI chassis. I've wanted to build one of these for a few years now.

Uses... I want to get into long range shooting competition and also use it for hunting. Both of these rifles would be a bit heavy for hunting, but the only other rifle I have is my K31 at the moment so I'll make it work. I will be starting to reload again as this goes forward. I also plan to get a suppressor for whatever rifle I get.

So, I was hoping to get some input from you guys as to the benefits/drawback between these two. I'm still reading a lot here too.... both of these seem to be decent setups. I just have to make a choice now, so any input would be of help.

Thanks

Re: LMT MWS vs. Remington 700 5R

Nice shooting! I lost count on number of hits between each, but safe to say that they both shoot pretty close (at least on steel @ 1038 yards)

.

I think this is just going to come down to a semi-auto vs. bolt choice...

Re: LMT MWS vs. Remington 700 5R

Thanks. My pal's bolt is much more suited to shooting to 1k than my 12lb MWS, but the MWS imo is an amazing specimen given a shooter and load are present.

The difference is size b/t a 26" bolt and 16" MWS is quite significant as well.

Re: LMT MWS vs. Remington 700 5R

Did I count right?

6 out of 9 for the LMT

8 out of 9 for the Rem700

Re: LMT MWS vs. Remington 700 5R

Sounds about right to me.

Most days when we shot these two side by side north of say 800yds or so, he was able to always hold at least a small advantage over me in terms of hit percentages.

Re: LMT MWS vs. Remington 700 5R

Great shooting guys. Love the MWS! I think I counted 7 out of 9 for the LMT . . . but I suck at math.

Re: LMT MWS vs. Remington 700 5R

I love my MWS but for a new guy just getting into the game I'd recommend starting with the bolt action. Learn the fundamentals with it and then make the transition to a gas gun and master that art. Bolt guns are easier to run then auto loaders. I mainly enjoy my LMT because it presents new challenges to the aspect of LR shooting. It looks pretty bad ass too

LOL small advantage? You are using a 4x or maybe 6x optic??!!! You went 7 out of 9 @ 1038yds with a freakin 1-4x on a .308 ar.... YOu are one hell-of-a shooter my friend!!! (not like U didn't know already) and thats one hell-of-a rifle!!

*EDIT* He's using a NF 2.5-10 but that is still some impressive shooting

Re: LMT MWS vs. Remington 700 5R

Thanks Dirtracer... I had thought of that too. I'm not new to the AR platform... but am new to long range, so that is an excellent point to consider. The lure of being able to change barrels/calibers had me leaning towards the MWS. But maybe I should learn to crawl before I start jogging. Plus, I will have fun building the 5R up!

Nice shooting. I'm happy to shoot at 600 yards with the .308. Being able to engage many more targets, plus the fact that my LMT with the A2 suppressor is really compact, very maneuverable made me pick it over a bolt. I'm so old that we used to consider a bolt rifle that shot <1' was gtg. I think most of the LMTs can do that.

Apples and oranges.

Bolt rifles are easy on the brass, don't sling it into the water/tall grass/ over the edge of a drop off, into next county, etc...

1038? Woof.

Again, good shooting.

Re: LMT MWS vs. Remington 700 5R

You've preliminarily chosen two top rifles in their platform (bolt and semi-auto). Both are obviously great rifles; I think your decision really boils down to whether you want a bolt action or a semi-auto. Better yet, get both!! In all seriousness, I believe there's an FAQ somewhere here on the 'Hide that talks about the pros and cons of each. My $0.02 is that bolt actions are easier to shoot very well. Semi-autos are more challenging, but also give the shooter the ability to put multiple precision shots down range very fast. Hope this helps! Please let us know what you choose!

Re: LMT MWS vs. Remington 700 5R

Very impressive. Do you by chance know the difference in elevation adjustments between the rifles?

Re: LMT MWS vs. Remington 700 5R

This is a question I've been struggling with myself. I don't think it's that much of an apples and oranges thing. I mean we're talking about rifles here. The rifle's job is to put bullets downrange where you're aiming.

I'd like to have a very accurate rifle. I'd like to have pistol grip ergonomics and an adjustable buttstock. I'd like to have detachable box magazines. I'd also like the ability to shoot multiple calibers.

There are a number of ways to do this. I'd really like to only own one centerfire rifle and if cost was no object I think I'd probably go with a DTA SRS.

However cost is definitely an object and I can get a DPMS platform rifle with all the features I've mentioned for under 1500 dollars. If I want a bolt action I'm going to have to pick a caliber and stick with it and I'm going to have to buy an aftermarket chassis system. That in addition to the rifle is going to put me at or well over the 1500 bucks I can get a DPMS for, and frankly it seems like the Savages and Remingtons I'm looking at aren't built to the same level of quality. I see fairly large variations in accuracy and function that I haven't heard of with the DPMS.

I think what it really comes down to is picking something you feel comfortable with that suits your needs and desires. I'm not experienced enough to know how big a difference a bolt action rifle is to shooting a semi auto. I mostly shoot .22LR right now with a 10/22 and have shot friends' bolt action rifles.

I suppose where I'm going with this is... does anyone want to sell me their DTA SRS for 1500 dollars?

Re: LMT MWS vs. Remington 700 5R

What power scope on the bolt. If you had a 25x SB on the LMT I bet you could get more hits. Maybe a box of 175gr too.
