Hello. I have read and learned a lot from this site but this is my first time posting. The lower is mega arms forged mil spec with a timney 3lb trigger, tango down grip and magpul ACS stock. The upper is government contract FN with a midlength gas system, magpul handguard and an extended latch. The barrel is a ballistic advantage 16" 1/7 twist stainless steel chambered in 5.56 w/ stryker comp. BCG is government contract from colt, staked. I got the rifle on a trade and after about 150rds the firing pin started getting damaged where it meets the bolt. I do not know if I am missing a piece, it is worn out or what (maybe nothing at all) but to me it looks like the bolt is sticking to far back in the bcg and it is damaging the firing pin. This is my first ar15. I had an LR-308B before this and after 1600rds through it, it never had anything like this. I know enough to get by (I hope) but on this I only know enough to get myself in trouble. Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: Need help please. Firing pin damage!

Pics have to be uploaded to a site like imageshack and then linked to your post. We can't see anything. Search "postings pics" or something similar if you need more detail.

Re: Need help please. Firing pin damage!

The tail of the bolt is what stops the forward motion of the firing pin. You will get a ring worn into the firing pin.

If it bothers you, replace the firing pin with a known quality piece and drive on. If the pin is a low quality part it may be of softer metal causing a deeper intend than on milspec parts.

+1 on pics...without SEEING what's happening, it could be any number of issues and we'd all be guessing at this point.

Re: Need help please. Firing pin damage!

Sorry. Finally got the pics up. Is the bolt to far back or is that normal?

Re: Need help please. Firing pin damage!

Dude, to put it bluntly your photos suck.

What I can see looks fine, but it's nowhere near good enough to determine if there is any damage to the firing pin.

My suggestion would be take it to a gunsmith or a certified armorer and have them inspect it.

Re: Need help please. Firing pin damage!

From what I can tell the bolt protrusion looks pretty normal for the bolt fully rearward, what it is when in battery is anyone's guess. Is the back of the bolt being hammered? it should be apparent.

The pictures of the firing pin show no evident damage, could you get a better close up or describe the nature of the damage?
When I've seen a problem the outside edge of the flange will be galled or chipped, a visible ring or difference of finish will form from normal wear, there should not be a noticeable amount of material missing, if there is the pin is likely softer than it should be.

Re: Need help please. Firing pin damage!

Thanks guys. I had a chance and got it looked at today. I was told the firing pin was to soft and to get a different one. I'm a noob to the ar15 platform and never saw this problem in my other semi. What fun would life be if one knew everything though.

I know but it was the best I could do with what I had at that moment. Also, my best friend was who turned me on to this site and said you were the man to talk to. I would assume so since you were right on the money. It is ironic though, that you answered my first post.
