I agree. Shot placement is as important. A FMJ in the heart or head will stop someone but a good bullet helps as well.

Re: 9mm defense rounds

IMHO, reliability of function in your firearm is the most important thing. I’ve never had any issues with factory 9mm, but I’ve had a couple premium factory cartridges in .40 and .45 that would not function in some handguns. Whatever you pick, buy a ‘test’ box and if you like it, shoot <span style="text-decoration: underline">at least</span> a hundred of that to prove reliability.

FWIW (which isn't much), I load 124gr golddots over a stout charge of HS-6 w/ Win SP-Mag primers.

THIS! ^^^^

Re: 9mm defense rounds

Winchester Ranger 147 Bonded is my preferred 9mm ammo. That said, Gold Dot and Federal Tactical HST are very good as well.

Re: 9mm defense rounds

Gold Dot 115 +P+ does 1375fps out of my Glock. That's .357 SIG/.357 Mag territory.

I got right at 1300 fps out of my G19 with Ranger 127gr +P+. Indeed nipping at the heels of .357 Sig

Re: 9mm defense rounds

If you look at every test that has been done that has included the Federal HST round it has outperformed all others. It is just an amazing round. Perfect mushrooms, deep penetration and great feeding. It just doesnt get better. The problem is that you cant just buy the HST bullet for reloading. And since most agencies have switched to the Federal HST for their carry round trying to find is very difficult.

Re: 9mm defense rounds

124/127 +p or +p+ works well. If you are running a 4" barrel or longer I suggest the Ranger T-series 147.

HST is indeed a great round, I get it when I can't get Speer Gold dot. I always shoot Gold Dots when I can though...bonded bullets are the most reliable in penetration. I have never seen a gold dot that didnt both expand and penetrate well. HSTs expand more, but will also separate jackets. I like HST better in 230gr 45ACP since even if it sheds the jacket there is still considerable mass in the core.

I have never seen a test where HST came separated and that includes being shot thru windshields, doors etc.

Re: 9mm defense rounds

I have seen an HST jacket separate in a deer, and also after being shot into water.

There is no non-bonded bullet that I know of that is not susceptible to this...thats why bonded bullets exist. HSTs are great bullets...both of the shots I described were at close range and a sample size of two is not definitive. Besides, we should keep in mind that jacket separation is not a catastrophic failure anyway if the core penetrates as it should, which it did on the two cores I saw separate. The cores were expanded perfectly, and more importantly the core held together in one piece. Jacket separation therefore wasn't that big of a deal since the jacket is a small fraction of the total mass.
