Re: 14.5" barrel w/ 12" rail?
Yeah, that's a great length of rail and barrel combo. What I like is that:
That setup lets you shoot comfortably from a bipod, if you choose to do that.
If you feel like shooting iron sights, it gives you a very nice, long, sight radius that is easy to shoot accurately, at longer ranges.
It allows you to run a fore-grip, light, laser, or whatever you want, without being too cramped and limited about where you put your accessories and switches.
I think all those setups are free-floated which aids in accuracy.
I like the quick pointability of the 14.5 inch barrel, over a 16.
Last, it gives you a nice long rail that you can grab on to with a high, far forward, support hand grip which gives you a good deal of leverage to help recover from recoil in rapid fire shooting.
Here's a pic of my Noveske Afghan 6.8 hunting rifle. It has a 14.5 barrel and an 11" handguard, I think.
Now, the next time I buy an Afghan, I would like to have that barrel in the new lighter, slimmer, Noveske NSR handguard.
My only beef with slim handguards like the Troy rail, is that they get frickin hot, and quick, when you're doing speed drills like Vtac half and half, etc. Guns get hot, just standing in the Texas heat. The bigger Noveske specd SWS rail doesn't get so hot that you need gloves, like my Troy rail which I have on another rifle-DD rails don't heat up too badly either. I have hopes that the NSR, when used with the form fitting NSR rail panels, will be the best of both worlds and be light and slim, but insulate hands from the heat a bit. We'll see.
Have fun, whatever you choose.
