I have a question for those in the heating/cooling industry that know their stuff. I have a boat load of JP-5 Jet fuel that is just laying around, I would like to mix it with Kerosene for my portable heating unit.

Is this something that anybody has done before, or is there real safety issues with doing so. Its similar to the jet fuel I have, but I am no heating expert. Please let me know if this can safely be done. I have had a few locals who claim its dangerous, I just wanted to hear from people I trust.

Re: Kerosene/Jet Fuel heating question.

I've run JP-5 straight in kerosene heaters long term. It smokes, ensure you have good ventilation. We didn't experience any problems mechanically.

Re: Kerosene/Jet Fuel heating question.

I talked to an aircraft mechanic that works for Cessna. He said between the smell and smoke you are better off not using it unless its for outdoor use only.

Re: Kerosene/Jet Fuel heating question.

If you are into camping or the like, you can use the jet fuel in various camp stoves, like the Primus Omnifuel or the MSR whisperlite universal.

Re: Kerosene/Jet Fuel heating question.

Ok Mark, I'll take a gallon or so off your hands since Ive got MSR Whisperlite Universal.

If you could run the heater outside and pipe the heat in through a filter or something, it may work to remove the smoke and smell.

Or set it up like a fireplace blower setup where you just use a fan to pull the heat off the ducting.

Re: Kerosene/Jet Fuel heating question.

I know people that do it...... but I would not cook with jet fuel. Unless you like that taste.

After 5 years in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Helicopter mechanic I have grown use to the taste...lol

I just have as mall wick type heater that radiates heat, not a torpedo type.

I have run No. 2 ultra-low-sulfur diesel through a wick-type heater. It did not go well - lots of smoke and soot, and eventually it clogged the wick with some sort of waxy residue

Put that experience into the category of "should have known better". I believe that JP-5 is lighter than pump diesel fuel, so you may have better luck.

Re: Kerosene/Jet Fuel heating question.

Let us know how this goes. I used to run 100LL through my truck when I worked at a flight school, I don't 'think' it hurt my truck.

Re: Kerosene/Jet Fuel heating question.

The only issue I see is if your on a job site and OSHA shows up. Blue containers are for kerosene only. Just for the simple fact someone does not use it in a device that would cause a problem. But if it is for personal use and your not worried about it, it shouldn't be a problem.

Re: Kerosene/Jet Fuel heating question.

That what we used in DS to heat our tents. JP5 smokes but works in the wick style heaters. Cutting it will make it work better and smoke less.

Re: Kerosene/Jet Fuel heating question.

JP-5 is really no different than kero at normal temps/pressures - the only real difference is vapor pressure at altitude and lower temperatures.

I'm an engineer in a combustion lab and we routinely test combustors with kero while jp-5/jp-8 will be used in service.

We do vent the exhaust, so I have no experience with the harm in the additives. Having said that, I would burn it anywhere I burn kero.
