Re: HBO's Generation Kill

100 percent with Ghog. The book was a phenomenal piece of writing. Not generally a fan of Rolling Stone's position on things... but the stringer/reporter who did this captured his subjects brilliantly.

After doing Band of Brothers and The Pacific so well... Generation Kill was very much a disappointment on video.

But read the book. First rate.

Cheers,

Sirhr

Re: HBO's Generation Kill

I thought the show was pretty good but slow as all hell. I think it was six episodes which could have easily been compressed down to one or two.

Re: HBO's Generation Kill

Read Generation Kill first, then One Bullet Away: The Making of a Marine Officer by LT Nathaniel Fick, he was the LT of the recon unit from Generation Kill. It's about his time in the Marine Corps his views of the same events. Well written and great read. I agree the book was way better than the series.

+1

I actually read "One Bullet Away", watched the miniseries, then read "Generation Kill".

Not being anywhere close to OIF I was entertained by the miniseries, and it was very interesting to compare & contrast the content of both the miniseries and the book with Nate Fick's recollection of events.

Re: HBO's Generation Kill

I have read this book as well as watched the series. I thought the book was great but of course I would expect nothing less from an author/journalist who used to work for "Hustler Magazine". The author really listened to individuals he was covering.
I thought the series was also pretty good but there were some things added for Hollywood effect that took away from the true story line.

Re: HBO's Generation Kill

It was a good portrayal of how Infantry Marines talk and act.

The saw gunner was my favorite character.
