Just curious, has anyone here vac-sealed ammo? A couple of years ago, a friend gave me a "battle pack" of NATO ammo that seemed to be vac-sealed. I was wondering if I could do some of my ammo the sane way using my vac-food sealer. Any do's and don'ts?

Re: "seal-a-meal" ammo

Friend of mine does it, no issues, I have a bag he loaded for me that I opened 7 years later and it was as new, but another bag that was from the same lot that I opened when he made it and stored in the same ammo can had some oxidation and slight discoloring.

I use a food saver...I make little 5 and 10 round blister packs for my buddies....Just maybe watch out for the tip of the projectile...They tend to pierce the food saver bags. Just protect the sharp edges with something you know

I do this with 10 round packs using the plastic inserts from commercial ammo boxes. The kind that will fit on a belt. Have hundreds of them I scavenged from the range where every hunter throws them away after sighting in their rifle.

On that note, I also put my .308 rounds in the same case holders and then store them in a .30 cal can. Enough room for 180 rounds and a dessicant pack.

As far as I'm concerned "there is some ammo and more ammo. There's no such thing as enough ammo".

Re: "seal-a-meal" ammo

We have a food saver and the bags are pretty robust, seems like it would be hard for a bullet tip to go through it unless you are manhandling the sealed packs. If you seal it in your kitchen and then just set the pack in your ammo stash, it doesn't seem like you would have to worry so much about the tips. Then again I haven't tried it yet, maybe I'm FOS.

Re: "seal-a-meal" ammo

I sealed two bags of 2k .223 ammo, one leaked, the other didn't. The one that didn't kept ammo shiny for 6 years before I broke into it.
It was cool, but haven't tried it since.
Two gallon painter's pails sealed with dessicant does the same, and you can stack em as high as you want.

Re: "seal-a-meal" ammo

Im not sure its because the tip is so "sharp" its just a small pressure point and just a slight amount of banging around will puncture the bag over the tip and then looses vacuum....Ive seen it and done it...More food saver plastic or cardboard fixed it for me

Not necessarily FOS. IF all that happened to the bagged ammo was to just sit there in your stash, great. In reality, everything moves over time if only while settling. If you're packing something like a FMJ round nosed round for either 9mm or .45, then the bullets won't be as likely to puncture the bags. A-max's or the ragged tipped BTHP's most common to the 30 cal family, more likely to have "leaks".
