But non-smokers feel free to chime in too.

How many of you feel that it is perfectly acceptable to throw a cigarette, lit or not, out of your car/truck window? I see this almost daily, from all types of people. Most, I assume, would never throw a wrapper, pop can, etc out of their car, but it seems like they don't think twice about cigarettes.

When I worked patrol, I stopped everyone I saw throwing cigarettes out of their vehicles. About half were just lazy pigs, and the others were decent folk it seemed. But still, it appeared as though most didn't see what the big deal was.

Almost all cars have ash trays. Why not use them?

What is everyones thought on people throwing cigarettes out of cars????????

I'm a former smoker and it does come down to laziness IMO, and I was guilty of it as well. But FYI there are a lot of vehicles now that don't come with ashtrays and it's now just an option.

Littering for sure. I have noticed that alot of new vehicles don`t come with ashtrays. Also throwing out cigs is what has caused alot of fires.

I did it when I used to smoke 10 years ago, not proud looking back!

Some assholes DO use their ashtrays in their cars... then dump all the butts out on the ground when it gets full! That pisses me off the most!

Is this going to turn into a we need ashtrays in our military vehicles thread? I don't ever remember driving or riding in one that did have an ashtray, in fact when I was building military vehicles you were not allowed to smoke in them at the factory. But maybe that's because they didn't have ashtrays... I smell a pet peeve thread.

Every time I see a smoker toss a cig butt (lit or not) out the window, it reinforces my dislike for them. I don't mind if they want to smoke in their auto, in fact, it is none of my damned business. But the littering, and fire hazard caused by burning, or barely burning ones irritates the hell out of me.

Tossing cig butts out the window causes me to vote against anything that might help smokers, and in due course, I vote for anything that inconveniences them as a result. Simple payback for irritating my sensitivities.

(Except for one guy that I stopped, that had just been discharged from the USMC, that decided to throw his smoke out the window. But then again, I quess he was a civilan then too now wasn't he)

Not a damn thing I suppose. Just thought I'd give you sumin else to bitch about beside civilian assholes. But just think, how many solders would want to ride around in a MV that's been smoked in when it could blown up by a ied any minute? That ied gonna cause a lot more smoke than a ciggy butt and it's going to mess up the environment much more as well. What I'm really getting at is you should worry more about things that are worth worrying about and less time worrying about stupid crap. Right now over in Africa women and children in a certain area are being eaten by one or two man eating tigers, children here and elsewhere starving, disease and other things and all you can come up with is a stupid thread about ciggy butts. Go eat some maggot infested rice and come back here and tell something worth listening to.

And I don't chuck butts when a cyclist is behind me, or when the roadside is dry enough for a fire. BTW, the lung cancer rate for non-smokers is about 3-4 in 1000, and smokers is about 6-8 per thou. So the actual risk is 3-4 per thousand---Big Deal.

Just a simple question on people's opinion on the subject. Never felt as though I was whining, but you feel what you want. Big suprise by the way that you apparently take offense to it considering it appears as though you smoke.

If you want to smoke, go ahead and smoke. I don't give a shit what you do. If you want to justify the health risks in your own head, have fun with that too. Last I checked, lung cancer is only one of many complications associated with smoking. What would be even more concerning to me is the price these days. If you want to piss your money and health away, I am not trying to stop you.

I just think its wrong to leave your leftovers wherever you choose.

Yeah well human feces is biodegradable as well but you don't see me driving down your street and dumping buckets of shit just because its biodegradable. I don't care if people smoke but have a little respect.

I'm just tired of the Demonization of smokers. Second hand smoke issue is just another excuse for the do-gooders. European studies of married couples where on smoked, and the other didn't, show the maximum effect(european cigarettes, tiny apartments, 8+ hr exposures a day) was 1.2 x the cancer rate of non-smokers. One study showed no effect (Spain, I think at .95x the rate). Now you can't smoke in NYC parks??? BS!!!!

Problem is you seem to believe everything your told (probably by the media), many women get lung cancer who have never smoked cigarettes. Oh by the way when you get back from Africa stop by so you can clean the ashtray on my motorcycle.

Im not sure how this turned into a lung cancer thread. As I stated rather clearly, I don't give a fuck whether or not you choose to smoke. Hell, I smoked many years ago for about 1.5 years. So bitching about smoking in general would make me a hipocrit. I also chewed for years. My smoking days overlapped with my chewing days, so I can honestly say I always had a spitter handy for my butts, and never threw them out of the car.

If anyone chooses to smoke, that is their right, and it doesn't bother me one little bit. I'd even give you a match if you ever needed one.

My question is not about health risks, or the military, or africa, or whether or not new cars have ashtrays.

My question is why do smokers think it is perfectly acceptable, and NOT littering, to throw there butts out of their car.

While I am dumb, overweight, balding, and ugly, I am not completely retarded. I realize that there are MUCH bigger issues not only in the US, but everywhere that humans exist. I was bored last night and thought I'd see if anyone was on the same page as me, or see if a smoker could justify throwing a butt out the winder'.

I had a friend that was pulling his duck boat with blind full of dead grass, the boat was full of gear, sure as shit someone flicked one just right out a window while going down the road and lit the boat up like a roman candle... I've never passed up an opportunity to hand out a coupon for that kind of laziness.

Back, back, way back before the automobile when people were handing the reins over to grandma so they could roll their own and get it lit before taking the reins back again... ya that's when it all started. They was flicking their butts way before they were flicking their bic lighters. Yeap they were doing it way before they invented car windows. It's obviously a hereditary thing passed down from generation to generation. A disease that can only be cured with lots of expensive prescription drugs that haven't been invented yet. It's a disease that's way out of control. Those expensive prescription drugs can only be made with real Tiger pee from South Africa. But alas it's illegal to transport Tiger pee out of the country. That's why I wanted you to go to South Africa, to bring back the ever elusive Tiger pee we need in order to be cured. Oh ya it's illegal to kill any Tigers over there except the man eaters. Good luck Jim and should you be caught, captured or killed during your mission our government will disavow any knowledge of your existence.

Wow, surprised this thread has gotten this long with no right answers.

Bottom line: Cigarettes stink, but cigarette butts stink even worse. NOBODY is cool with the foul stench that comes off a pile of cigarette butts. Not even smokers.

Furthermore, that stink wafts off the ashtray and stinks up the entire car. Sure, smoking in a car makes the car stink in and of itself, but keeping an ashtray with butts in it IN THE CAR is a sure way to ruin the interior. The ash itself is so lightweight the slightest breeze blows it around and it gets onto and into any piece of fabric, into every nook/cranny, and simply goat-fucks the car.

As a former smoker, I can say with 100% certainty this is the reason we fling them out of the car. I was totally guilty of doing this, by the way. I would however never do it with another vehicle/cyclist directly behind me - partly in case it was a cop, party because I didn't want that person following me to say to themselves "what an asshole", and partly because of the littering aspect. However, they are biodegradable, so is it REALLY littering?

Here's a question: Would you ticket someone for flinging a banana peel or apple core out of their car - provided they're not hitting other cars, pedestrians, cyclists etc etc etc??

As a former smoker, when I smoked in my truck, I would drop the butt in a half filled bottle of water. It extinguished the butt and kept that stuff off the ground. In fact, everyone I hung out with in college did that.

As for people littering (more the just cig butts) it pisses me off to no end. I was driving home yesterday and saw someone OPEN THEIR DOOR ON THE HIGHWAY AND THROW A BOX OF SHIT OUT. Seriously, WTF! Take your garbage home and dispose of it properly.

Back when I smoked I threw them out the window in urban/industrial areas because I flat out did not care about adding a little bit of refuse to a whole lot of grocery bags, fast food wrappers, pop/beer cans/bottles, condoms & wrappers, hypodermic syringes, awful lot of it along the roadways whether it was thrown or blows out I don't know, I suspect allot of thrown though. I didn't throw the packs or wrappers, though many do, and I didn't throw where there was an obvious fire hazard, or away from the interstate in rural or wilderness areas, doesn't make it right, but I didn't care, if I had ever been ticketed I would've probably asked if they ticketed who ever threw whatever larger piece of trash was visible from where I was, and pay my fine. When you get down to it, I like my nature as near to unspoiled as possible and just don't care about concrete and asphalt environs, the last few years that I smoked I started to use an ashtray even around town, but even then the damn thing seemed to be full all the time and I wasn't stopping just for it, and was not the sort to just pitch a pile of ash and butts. Just my scattered perspective since you asked.

What's really great is when your house is right at the end of someones cigarette, on their route to work. I could count down the day that an empty pack would be in my driveway by counting the butts by my mailbox. Once I finally figured out what time they were showing up, I camped out and waited to catch the asshole red-handed. I stood in the street the next day and flagged the bitch down. I don't know if I broke her of her sorriness, but I know there are no longer any butts by the mailbox.

From a moron you'll get responses like they're biodegradable and that's what fire fighters are for. In the end though, what goes better with your favorite refreshing beverage? Anything that smokes, stinks if it hasn't had some lead slung through it. I smoke for a time, and it's second nature just to pitch that bitch out the window. Nobody thinks. The only way to regulate such a cancer pole is to outlaw it. Open that can of worms.

I have a closet full of t-shirts with holes in them from this crap, and the worst part is the fuckers look right at me in their fucking side mirrors before tossing their shit.

Flat out zero tolerance? Or that's what the sign says? They have those signs everywhere, higher even, the max fine is for offenses like pitching an entire truckload of household waste on the roadside.
