So I bought a new rifle for deer season this year. It is a Savage 110 .270 with a synthetic stock. I was looking around the web and came upon SH which got me thinking about turning it into a longer range gun.

Instead of taking 100-200 yard shots, I was wondering if this would be a good gun to take 250-400 yard shots with? I plan on practicing a good bit to make sure that I am accurate so as not to just wound the deer.

Please let me know what you think!

Re: Savage 110 .270?

Welcome to the hide... The 270 win is a great cartridge and with the yardage you mention should be not sweet with 130's. Now if you are just shooting factory ammo, I would say 400 yards max but you would have to verify that with targets.

I love long range shooting and its fun, but when hunting always try to get as close as possible. If you can't and within your comfort zone take that long range shot, but be patient.

IMO that 140-150 gr in a 270 win would work best for longer range shots. Enjoy your savage and you can always change calibers later if you like.

Re: Savage 110 .270?

270 will work fine, especially with 150gr VLD handloads. There's a reason its such a popular hunting rifle.

That said, you can change the chambering of your Savage by yourself in just minutes with minimal tooling...should you decide you want something else.

Savage is the adult Lego set. You can turn it into anything you want at home with less than $100 in tools. With the long action, your options are pretty much endless on caliber choices. When ready, pick a caliber, barrel to specs, and tighten her up. (if you go Magnum, you'll need to upgrade your bolt head ($30).

.270 takes lots of deer round here.

The 270 is a great caliber. I have a Savage 116 FCSS in 270. It shoots 3/8" groups with Federal Premium 130 gr TSX and 130 gr Copper Trophy bullets. A little caffeine in me and it can open up to 3/4". Your plan is well within the 270 limits.
