Sidearms & Scatterguns Looking for a full size 1911

As the title says I am looking to get a full size 1911. My local shop has a few nighthawks and wilsons. I went up there to check out the GRP because I was almost set on it then I saw the Wilson X-Tac, which I have never seen or head anything about.

Does anyone have any experience with the Wilson X-Tac. I am having a hard time having to choose between the two. The price isn't a huge deal but I can get a GRP with a rail and surefire x300 for the price of the Wilson, I am just not all that sure about a rail on a 1911.

Thanks for any advice.

Re: Looking for a full size 1911

You can get a Colt Gold Cup for $1100 from Colt, probably cheaper at gun stores.

That is if you want a real 1911.

Re: Looking for a full size 1911

Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't the colt come standard with the adjustable target sights? I will see if they have one at the shop and take a closer look at it.

Thanks

Re: Looking for a full size 1911

Burke,

I'm not trying to be a killjoy, but now you're looking at two totally different guns(IMHO!)

First you mention a workhorse pistol like the GRP. If I read your 2nd, you may be considering the Gold Cup?

Don't get me wrong, both are nice pistols, but serving two very different arenas. GRP - work pistol Gold Cup - target pistol. The new Gold Cups are also Series 80 firing system. GRP is Series 70. Again, in my opinion, Ser 70 is the "real" 1911.

In the end, any of the ones mentioned can and will work. If it's for carry, I'd go GRP(I have one and love it!) If it's for fun and plinking, the Gold Cup will serve you great, even with the Ser 80 firing system.

I have no experience with Wilson other than the CQB model. Get one with the features you want, and buy it. I just ordered a Nighthawk Talon, I spec'd it to what I wanted, waited 10months, and now I'd order one with different details. In the end, you won't have just one, it'll be five......six......eight.... and as many as you can justify and/or hide from the wife!

Re: Looking for a full size 1911

LOVE My GRP Recon. Buy it you will not be sorry. Customer service is great. I have their .22 conversion kit for it also and it rocks!! Easy to put on and accurate as heck!

Re: Looking for a full size 1911

Glock- I was gonna take a look at the gold cup per kraigs recommendation, I thought it had the target sights which was one of the things mentioned, which I am not very fond of. But thank you for the recommendation about the grp. That is what I have been looking at until I went to the store today and saw the Wilson which had me a little intrigued. Between the two there is things I like and don't like about both.

Thanks

Walter

Re: Looking for a full size 1911

I will tell ya, I have sold almost all of my 1911's with a rail on them..... There's just something wrong with a railed 1911. That being said, I love my Wilson it's a fricking sewing machine just runs and runs and runs.

Re: Looking for a full size 1911

Rails are useless in my mind. If you can't shoot without it you probably cant shoot with the accessories either.

Re: Looking for a full size 1911

So which one if any did you buy and how is it.

Re: Looking for a full size 1911

Have not got one yet, Helping my brother with his suppressor purchase before I get one. Leaning towards ordering one from nighthawk to have it built how I would like though.

As for the rail, if you're going to mount a WML, then it's pretty necessary. If you want the rail because it tends to add about 1oz of weight up front, and you look at it as recoil management, I won't argue that with ya. HELL, if you want the rail because it looks cool, ya know what...it's your money and you have this awesome opportunity called choice!

You're obviously looking at quality firearms, I won't bad mouth either of them. Personally, I just think Wilson is higher priced for very close to the same features as N-H. I have a GRP Recon and Talon II. N-H has impressed me, and I'm ordering a Falcon. I have a gun problem and I don't wanna quit.

The only thing about railed 1911s is holster options dwindle very quickly. Now add a light to the mix, and you're pretty much limited to Kydex only.

Keep us posted!

have you seen NH's holsters for the Recon? Very nice all leather or croc. Works of art. But pretty pricey.
