Hi im pretty new to long range shooting. Im currently working on a sniper rifle build and not sure which scope i want to use. The rifle ill be using is a remington 700 in a aics chassis in 300 win mag. I wont really be shooting past 1000 yards and i will be using the rifle for plinking and hunting. Ive decided to go with a nightforce scope, but im not really sure which model i want to get. I either want the 3.5-15x50 nxs or the 5.5-22x50. I would like an ffp scope, but im not sure if 15 power is going to be enough. Is it better to go with the 22 power but sfp or the 15 power ffp? If u have better scope suggestion please let me know those as well, i have about 2000 to spend on a scope.

Thank you, McNasty

P.S. Also incase someone didnt know Nightforce offers a military discount of around 300$. Just email their government/LE sales and theyll send you a list of scopes and prices.

Re: Best power?

depends on the size of your targets... if u want a FFp, look at the razor for more power and features over the F1.

call vortex on the .mil discount... its close to what u posted on the razer

Re: Best power?

Yep i looked at the Vortex scopes, i would still rather have a nightforce. Is a 15 power scope enought to accurately shoot a paper silhouette at 1000 yards?

Re: Best power?

Depends on your eyes and target size, and optical quality. I run a Premier Heritage 3-15 and have no problems engaging targets at under 1500 yards, spotting hits and ranging smaller targets at extended range is the main benefit of additional magnification. Read the "Optics Selection" post on the top of the optics section, it will help you out.

Re: Best power?

Yeah i been leaning towards the 3.5-15 model. Are there any another scopes around 2k that are ffp and have an illuminated reticle beside Vortex. Ive looked at leupold and a couple of other off brands, is there anything else you guys can recomend. Ill be hunting boar, deer and elk up to 1000 yards.

Re: Best power?

I feel like the Vortex has the best combination of features in that price range. IOR-Valdada might have an offering in that price range that would suit your needs as well.

Check out the Premier Heritage Light Tactical series. Just north of 2K by a few hundred.

Re: Best power?

That 3.5-15 F1 is one fine scope. I have one and love it. I shoot it to 1000 often. But I'm shooting steel. But for hunting, it just doesnt get any better. I like them because they are affordable , built like a tank with good features. Everything I need.

Re: Best power?

Ah yes the old Nightforce quandary. I ended up selling the 5.5-22's and got a F1.

Yes I like it better being that it's FFP and yes I've had occasions where I would have liked more mag. If it was a 4-16 I think I'd be content.

I'd reconsider the Razer with 10 mil knobs. If you can live without illume the HDMR is a bargain.

Re: Best power?

I have been using the Nightforce 5.5x22x50 for a year now with 308 and 300 win mag to 1000 yards with great results. Including paper and steel silhouettes. I think you could still use lower magnification if you wanted. I really like the extra magnification for plain old observation of objects I may not be engaging as targets. Just fun to see that far in detail. Of course I could use binoculars but I travel the landscape very lightweight. Can't go wrong with any Nightforce. Products. I expect my scope will last a lifetime for any hunting or shooting I ever expect to do.

Re: Best power?

I would choose the NF NXS 5.5-22X50 over the NXS 3.5-15X50. I have been using 3 5.5-222X50's but decided to put the 3.5-15X50 on my LMT MWS. Big mistake, always wishing I had some more magnification.

Re: Best power?

i've been running a 5.5-22x56 for a few years now. i really feel like it gives you a good balance of adjustment, magnification, and light transmission. the only problem is the deer i thought was going to pop out 200-400 yards away ended up being 50, and 5.5x on a moving critter was a mainly a matter of luck
