Bought a DPMS 24" and I'm thinking about changing the upper reciver to the forward assist upper. But I have the standard forearm on it. I'm wondering what one would be suggested for that. Also looking to thread the barrel what brake would work well?

If you change the upper receiver to the FA type you would need to get a bolt carrier with the notches for it to work. Also the scope rail is taller on the slick side so watch your clearance if you use a large scope. Past that the free floating forearm screws onto the barrel nut so it should just transfer over, call DPMS to make sure though.

I don't think that this is actually true. The DPMS forward assist actually pushes on the back shoulder of the bolt. There are no notches in it so your same bolt and carrier assembly would work in the new receiver as long as it has the shoulder similar to this about 1/2 way down the bolt:

The "A3 type" upper is lower than the "Lo-Pro" but changing rings or adding a riser could adjust that easily.

I have a LR 308 Oracle and just did some unscientific research into what worked best on my rifle. I tested a Battle Comp BABC $220, Damage industries muzzle brake $18.95, and a JP Bennie Cooley $100.
The BABC did an excellent job of keeping the muzzle rise down and the rifle on target, but did nothing for recoil control. The Damage Industries muzzle brake reduced recoil by 20 to 30 percent, but did nothing to keep muzzle rise down. This could be done by drilling one of two holes in the top of the muzzle brake, as some other brakes have. What do you want from a $20 muzzle brake!!!! The JP Bennie Cooley did the best job of recoil reduction. I would estimate 40 to 50 percent of reduction. It also did a fair job of keeping the muzzle rise down. But it's loud and the side blast won't win you any friends at the range.
The upshot of all this is that the JP muzzle brake did the best job and didn't degrade the accuracy of the rifle. In fact my shot groups actually shrank by about an 1 inch with all the ammo that I shot thru it. My rifle will shoot 4 shot groups into .655 inches with TAP FPD 168 gr. and AMAX 168 gr factory ammo without the JP brake, if I do my part. So I'm keeping the JP brake on my rifle. YMMV
