Im working on my sniper rifle build which is a remington 700 300 win mag in a AICS 2.0 cahssis. My one problem is i cant decide which 700 model to get. Is the 5r which is 1000$ worth the extra 500$ from the sps? I only care about the action since im replacing the chassis as soon as it comes in. If there is a better action in any other 700 model please let me know. My price limit is around 1k but i might go 1.5 if the features are alot better.

Re: Which remington 700?

If you are looking to spend $1500 on a barreled action i think you might be able to find a custom one for about that price. If you look for a week in the for sale section one is bound to come up. You would be much better off.

Re: Which remington 700?

Just to save you some hassle, it's not a sniper rifle unless your a school trianed sniper, being law enforcement or military or a private contractor sniper.

If your a trained sniper then i am sorry for jumping the gun.

Re: Which remington 700?

Thanks RugerSlinger, but i have my heart set on the remington build. I mostly just want your guys opinion if the 5r is worth the extra 500$ from the SPS considering the action only. Or if there are better 700 models.

Re: Which remington 700?

For longer strings of fire, the 5r or any heavy barreled rig may be a better choice than the SPS.

You didn't mention rebarreling. If you are going to do that then save money and get an SPS or used rifle and use that action.

Are you sure you want a 300wm?

Re: Which remington 700?

Definitely be doing alot of fireing. Its going to be a range and a hunting rifle. I havent really thought about rebarreling, but thats defenatly an option i need to look in to. I was orginially going to go with 338 lapua but decided it was too much. The 300wm offers good power for hunting (up to 1000 yards) and is cheap enough for the range. I am open to other caliber choices thought.

Re: Which remington 700?

Not really sure about hunting at 1000yds (the magic number), but a 338 lapua is overkill for most hunting.

A .308 would be a great first build. I'm just guessing this is your first precision rifle. It's cheap and effective for most game and punching paper at extended ranges.

As mentioned, the police models are cheaper than a 5r and will shoot great. And there happens to be a few listed on this site for sale...

+1 for this. A great compromise that will allow you to build on it later.

Re: Which remington 700?

McNasty as mentioned above, it might get you a lot further on this site, if you refrain from using the term sniper rifle build and use something like precision rifle build. With regards to your original question, it would really be a great place to start if you picked up a Remington 700 5R in 300 win mag, if you look around they are available with both a 26 inch barrel and a threaded 24 inch barrel and if you plan to do as much shooting as you suggest, then a brake will ease the pain with the 300. As for going with a Remington 700 PSS in 300, the cost isn't really that much more, but I think many will agree that the 5R barrels are providing excellent accuracy out of the box, a suggested starting load might be 76 grains of H-100 over the 208 Amax. Also with regards to the AICS stock, although an excellent product its not for everyone, I suggest getting some time behind one before you purchase.
