Hello guys

Not posted much on here but always lurking and trying to learn what I can.

I have always wanted a fully camo'd rifle but never been able to afford to get it dipped or pay someone more talented to do a nice Duracoat job.

After seeing a 'How to' article on here I thought sod it, and ordered 3 cans on Krylon. kaki, green and brown. Must admit I was a bit daunted to paint my pride and joy, and what is also my main tool for work, but I figured its only paint and easily removed.

The rifle in question is my Remington 700 on an AICS stock. Here are some pics of the different stages in between painting. Everything I didn't want painting was masked off and the whole gun wiped down with an alcohol wipe.

First coat was a kaki base coat

Second coat was the green. I used some marram grass to create the effect

Finally I finished with the brown, I used the marram grass again and also some netting for effect

I used a hair dryer to blow over the gun after each pass of paint to help it dry and keep the colour nice and flat.

Here it is all finished. Please excuse the poor pics, they were taken on my iPhone 3GS. Will get some better ones once the weather improves

Sorry if I've rambled on too much. ALL comments welcome good or bad

Cheers

Re: First attempt at camo painting a rifle

Looks darn good to me. I practiced on my kid's toy rifle, but chickened out before I got to mine...I blamed it on wanting a second dark tan color that I don't have yet! Nice work.

Re: First attempt at camo painting a rifle

Thanks very much.

In the end I just thought what's the worst that can happen. It's only paint.

I'll probably keep it like that for 6 months and then paint it again

Re: First attempt at camo painting a rifle

Nice job

Re: First attempt at camo painting a rifle

Looks good, I just did a GAP camo on my BC, and wish i'd have used OD green for the last color instead of FDE, stripped it all off, and did a blk n OD splatter scheme. i'll post some pics after i clear it. Good job man.

Re: First attempt at camo painting a rifle

Very nice camo job.

I just finished my second camo job last weekend. It is definitely intimidating when you put the first coat on the rifle. After that it is all down hill.

Thanks for sharing.

Re: First attempt at camo painting a rifle

Looks damn good to me,like you been doing it forever. Nice job

Re: First attempt at camo painting a rifle

Thanks very much guys. nice to read such positve comments. im gonna get some better quality pictures today.

I do have a Starlight Archer Monocular that clips onto the front of the scope (hence the large butt plate) but couldn't bring myself to paint that as it cost almost as much as the rifle. Lol

Re: First attempt at camo painting a rifle

That looks great. Cheers to you for giving it a go. It turned out fantastic!

Re: First attempt at camo painting a rifle

well, nice job on your first try, it doesn't need more than that, i think you are done.
congrats.

Re: First attempt at camo painting a rifle

Brilliant job!

Don't worry about the Archer. I did an old pair of AW skins two or three years back....great thing about it is that if you get bored or just want to go back to original finish...it's dead easy to strip off.

Re: First attempt at camo painting a rifle

Hoyla, i have only done two camo jobs before and i think you did an excellent job on it!!!! congrats on the fine camo.

Re: First attempt at camo painting a rifle

I think it looks great man. Now go run some rounds through that can and let us know how paint on can held up. You did a good job. Now go shoot it!

Re: First attempt at camo painting a rifle

Thanks again guys.

I've got a load of old 100 grain rounds knocking about. I might throw a load of them down in quick succession and see how the paint holds as suggested. Might even do a video too for a laugh.

I quiet fancy a set of the viper skins in FDE and maybe a re-paint after Christmas. But for now it will stay as is.

Re: First attempt at camo painting a rifle

Wow nice work that looks great

Re: First attempt at camo painting a rifle

hoyla - if you can do a couple of coats of matt Clearcote over the Krylon it will hold up well to handling....not so good on any slovent spillages though.
