Ok, first time posting so go easy.

I have a Vortex pst 6-24x50 FFP. I want to be able to use the optic on an AR-10 and a Rem 700 AAC SD 308. I was thinking of mounting a badger 20moa base on the rem and mounting the scope in a Larue SPR quick detatch. Any other mounting options or equipment recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Swapping optic between rifles.

You will of course need to re-zero for each rifle. But assuming your QDM is repeatable you can simply document the shift needed when going from one rifle to the other and upon switching immediately dial the scope, should only need minor tweaking of zero after that I would think.

Re: Swapping optic between rifles.

I would set my zero stop just under the rifle that uses the lowest zero, count from bottom up for the other rifles zero.

Re: Swapping optic between rifles.

But you really aren't going to get the highest precision from your rifle. If swapping from one AR platform to another it won't really matter but a quick detach really isn't the best for a precision rifle.

Re: Swapping optic between rifles.

Just modified original post. Looking for recommendations regarding the mounting solution I have chosen.

Re: Swapping optic between rifles.

What kind of solution would you recommend ? Can I have precision and still be able to swap ?

ADM Mounts

Re: Swapping optic between rifles.

I would recommend purchasing a Badger Ordnance 20 MOA base for the AAC-SD and a Badger Ordnance 22 MOA Riser Rail for the AR-10. That way you can use the same rings between the two rifles, you're just swapping onto different bases, which are close to the same taper. This means you won't have a drastic difference in zeros, cheekweld, or eye relief like you would have trying to use a cantilevered mount on a bolt action rifle.

Re: Swapping optic between rifles.

I have been very happy with my Larue mounts. I had a FN SPR without a scope this summer and was able to place the scope from my Grendel on it without a problem. It sat a touch high for my liking but it was the most versatile solution for sharing a scope between the two.

Re: Swapping optic between rifles.

This just never appealed to me. I'm sure it works for some people though, and I know good optics are expensive and you can only shoot one rifle at a time etc, so it could be worth a try. But for me I just wouldn't do it, especially because most of my rifles are for hunting and I dont always have time to get to the range before a hunting trip. I want to KNOW my rifle is spot on, not just assume.

Re: Swapping optic between rifles.

fully agree with Dirtydave.
A main thing with precision rifles is to really know that they always are spot on, no cold bore failures and never forgot what rife it actually was zeroed on.

I would put that PST on the rifle you need the most, put the otherone into the safe untill you can afford a scope for it.

Re: Swapping optic between rifles.

Two different ideas...

Ditch the QD, look for a traditional style one piece. If the rails aren't identical, you may have to mess with the tension adjustment for the QD levers or might not grip with the same force repeatedly when switching between the two. A good torque wrench should overcome that.

Something I was considering recently... (I don't know how much forward clearance you need for your scope on the ar-10) consider a solid cantilever (or just slightly raised) base and pick up a set of nice rings that would suit clearance for both, again traditional not QD.

I was in a similar boat recently and decided that Quick detatch was not necessary (I do still own them) and wouldn't be as precise as torquing it myself. Switching a scope between different rifles let alone of a different style is gonna take a minute... For me, the added inconvenience of having to have a torque wrench handy and the additional minute it takes over QD levers is worth the extra confidence and precision. It's also not something I have to do on-the-fly. You will also get alot more for your money losing the levers.

I'm not bashing the idea, and I do use QD, but for this situation I wouldn't feel it's indicated. I gave this thought for a while and after consideration and discussion with other members I decided against it for myself. It may work for you though.

Good luck with your setup-

I agree. Just get a good torque wrench and set the rifles up right with a quality set of rings. You don't want to use a one piece AR mount set up if you plan on moving the scope to a bolt gun. It will be mounted way too high. If you plan on using it on an AR and a bolt gun then use a good set of rings and a 20 MOA riser on the AR if the bolt gun has a 20 MOA base. If not then a standard riser.

Here is the same scope on my bolt gun and GAP-10. I don't use the GAP-10 much so I don't have it scoped and just move a scope over when I need it.

+1.

If you want QD ability just use QD rings. But if you run a cantilemvered mount you are going to need one hell of a rised on you stock to get proper stock cheek weld.

</div></div>. I'm going to go out on a limb and say you haven't done this before. With a quality mount there will be no issue.

I ran one scope one two rifles for quite a few months till I could pick up a second scope and never had an issue.

Re: Swapping optic between rifles.

I want to thank everyone for their advice. What i have going so far is a Nightforce 20moa base for the Rem700 AAC SD, and a Badger 22moa riser for the AR10. I think I am going to forego the QD system and get a heavy duty set of rings. Was thinking of going with Aadland Engineering triple lug rings. Anyone have any experience with these ? I know the Aadmount has recieved good reviews.

Re: Swapping optic between rifles.

I would say as a temporary solution, its works. I have a custom 300WM that I pulled the NF off because my hunt is over. Its a hunting rifle, used on for hunting. It may be till next year before I need it again.

But bouncing back and forth, PITA. My friend just bought a S & Bender and wants to do it. To each his own.
