Best optic for a carbine

Re: Best optic for a carbine

Best light is the sun.

In all seriousness, there isn't any best. There are different throws, widths, brightness, and modes. Some are super bright with a ton of different modes, others are bright enough with the basics.

Surefire, Streamlight, Blackhawk make good products. The options will depend upon what you want to use it for.

Lasers I know nothing about.

There are light/laser combos which opens up more possibilities.

I have a 4Sevens Maelstrom X10 that I got for $30 with battery and charger on clearance. At that price compared to surefire or streamlight I am happy with it.

Are you looking to use it to light up objects at distance or for CQB? Do you want a wide spread or a narrow spotlight?

IMO, lights and lasers are a waste of time and money unless you plan on breaching a room full of people with no lights as a swat member or you're going to laser designate a target for an air strike (this is humor people)...... Stick with the 1-4 optic and you're GTG.

If you want something for home protection, then get a pistol with a light.

Good advice. Lasers are stupid unless its a laser designator for night vision. Wait for awhile on the light and go shoot and enjoy your new rifle with the ammo you've bought.

After you've had the rifle awhile and you still want a light, get one. They can be very effective depending on what you use the rifle for. Don't accessorize too fast. Go slowly, think it through and add stuff you really need (if anything) not what looks cool.

Iron sights are the best for a carbine, IMO. I use a Vortex Sparc with a Larue LT660HK. Troy BUIS. Surefire 6P with Malkoff M61 and Larue LT707.

I personally have no use for magnification on a carbine.

Re: Best optic for a carbine

I used to think lasers were stupid until I shot the Crimson Trace Midnight 3-gun match this year. My team and I went out the week before and tested lights, lasers, night sights ect...we were all WAY faster with a laser. At close ranges a laser can be extremely effective. But anyways, Surefire and Elzetta make great lights, and of course I'm a fan of Crimson Trace for lasers.

Re: Best optic for a carbine

And in case your interested, Daniel Horner won the match with lasers on all three guns.

Re: Best optic for a carbine

I agree with most that lasers are a waiste of money unless you are running night vision. I have found that the Streamlight PolyTac 120 lumen light is a good affordable all purpose light. It is less than 40 bucks at most stores. It is bright enough to illuminate a target at over 50 yards and not so bright it will blind you inside when you hit a white wall. Put it in a Vltor offset light mount and you have a good set up for around $100 bucks.

Really? Yes, I'm interested! What guns and what match are you talking about? I've shot several multi-gun and long range matches squadded with Daniel and other AMU members and have never seen a laser on any of their guns.

If they were duty guns with laser designators for NV, I get it. Otherwise, I doubt it.
