The announcement of the Snipershide.com group build made me remember that I wanted to publicly thank Marc at Spartan Rifles for his great work as well as AI and Bartlein for some great products. I love my AIAX, I love it even more when it's making me look good.

After the 2009 SH.com group build I know that Frank thought long and hard about whether it was worth it to even do another one. I'm glad he decided that it was and I'm even happier that he chose Marc Soulie to do the build. Marc is detail oriented and has a true passion for the doing builds right. I spoke to him about 1.5 years ago about the process of chambering a barrel and the level of detail he put into describing the extra steps he takes convinced me right then to send him all my future work.

I've shot in 3 major matches this year, I am currently running 100% on my cold bore shots. There's lots of talk about whether cold bore shift really exists, whether it's the shooter or the rifle, etc etc. I don't know about other rifles, but I can tell you that when I miss....it's all me. In major matches a hit or miss on cold bore can move you up...or down...SEVERAL places. Cold bore hits are very important!!

The hostage target was a 200 yard single shot, then a 3 shot follow up next to it. The Shoot-N-C a 200 yard cold bore day 2 I think.

Your welcome JasonK!

The cold bore shot/shift thing you mentioned. Does it exist? I would say to an extent yes. What causes it? Could be several things.

One I do believe in is that the very first round from a clean barrel is that the first round velocity wise is usually slower than the rest. I would say 30-50fps. This normally makes your first round low. At short range say 100/200 yards you probably won't see it no the target but you will see it at long range.

Also as the barrel wears overtime I feel it becomes more of a factor.

I did a post yesterday in bolt action rifles. A tale of two guns. Look at the target for my first rounds fired thru the one gun. Very first round was like .400" lower than the next 3 rounds which shot a sub 1/3moa group. Cold clean barrel. I don't think being cold had anything to do with it. Just no fouling in the bore. The fouling acts like a lubricant for a lack of a better term. So your next rounds are a little faster than the very first.

Frank, would the heat have anything to do with the change in velocity? I've found that cleaning a warm barrel, the patches always seem to be harder to pass through (but it seems that barrels clean easier when warm). Perhaps the metal expands with heat making the bore "tighter"? Tighter=more pressure, more pressure=more velocity?

I agree 100%. That's why I always put 10-20 rounds down the barrel before going to a match. To make sure the clean bore is coated in powder and copper. I do the same when chronoing to get velocity for data.

Team Blaster also thanks the good people at Bartlein as well for their precision and attention to detail in their barrel making. Been using their barrels for a while now and can't say enough good things about them. All my rifles wear them now.

Re: Kudos to Spartan Rifles, AIAX and Bartlein

Some ammunition makers have standards for putting a test barrel into service when new and also to cleaning. Example being:

No new barrel will be used for testing data until it has 100 rounds on it.

Also the test barrel has to be cleaned at every 90 rounds.

Another is that X amount of rounds have to be fired thru it in X amount of time.

Every manufacturer might be a little different but they control how they do things.

Maybe/maybe not. There are other factors that can effect this. How much fouling is in the barrel? How many rounds does the barrel have on it? How many rounds in between cleanings?

I do believe a barrel cleans easier when it's still warm. Everything is soft and loose per say. If possible before I leave the range I'll run a couple wet patches thru the bore and leave the bore wet and then work on it at home.

More pressure does not necessarily mean more velocity! Pressure can go up with no increase in velocity.

Thanks Jason! I'm glad your AX is working out for you. I've also found my CCB shots to be slightly lower velocity so I always put some foulers down the tube before a match.

Thanks to you too Frank the awesome barrels you guys produce. They make me look good lol.

I am the same way. I don't get hard chrono data with a new barrel until after 150 rounds. I have found that there can be changes from new to that point. Never found serious accuracy problems though.
