Wich would you say is the better buy
Leupold Mark4 6.5-20 x50 ER/T M5 TMR FFP
Or
S&B 4-16 x50 pression hunter (P3) FFP

UnfortunatelyI can't get any variations to reticles and these two scopes seem to be the best In this price range!
I intend puting it on a Husqvarna 1740 in 30-06 I've just had refurbished and set up for long range hunting up to 800 yards

Re: S&B or Leupold

Either one should work well for your intended purpose. I would lean toward the Leupold with the configuration you describe, but would mostly add the most weight.

Re: S&B or Leupold

Be aware that the S&B Precision Hunter is limited by the turret to only 3.2 mils of elevation adjustment. This wont get you to 800 with clicks.

Re: S&B or Leupold

So you would then suggest the Leupold?
Wich is 100g lighter

Re: S&B or Leupold

Could I not just mount the S&B with a 20MOA cant base?
Would that not help?

Re: S&B or Leupold

The base doesn't matter. Once the zero is set, the zero stop limits the dial to only 32 cm adjustment. That equals about 500 yards/meters if clicking alone.

Re: S&B or Leupold

Thanks ctsmith, you are starting to educate me here, lets see if i have this right then. So If zero was set a 200m I would still only tech 500m on turret clicks and any further would have to be held over? Doesn't make sense then to have a 16x scope with such small virtical movement. By the way. Does the S&B PH 4-16x50 FFP (P3)
Which is the mil dot reticle have matching mil turrets? Or are the turrets MOA?

I have been able to find very little info on the S&B when it come to turret travel, ect
The only specs I got for it are length weight tube width and length.
If you have info on this it would be greatly appretiated!

So, in your opinion would you then rather go for the leupold 6.5-20 x 50 ER/T M4 FFP
TMR ?

Re: S&B or Leupold

Mike, the scope actually has about 110 clicks (cm) of internal adjustment. The problem is that when you zero it in and set the zero stop on the turret, the turret limits the range to 32 (cm). The bottom line is that you have 110 clicks but can only use 32 of them for dialing. There is no way to use the turret without limiting the range to 32 clicks. This is how I understand it. I have never had one (or handled one) and this is why.

So wherever you zero your scope, say 200m, you only have 32 (cm) clicks from that point.

I am sure S&B has their reasons, but I am baffled by this.

Re: S&B or Leupold

Regarding my opinion on the Leup, I am a hunter who also likes to shoot. I try to rig most of my rifles with hunting scopes. A 6.5-20 is not a hunting scope (and I have one). But everyone has their own taste. A variable up to 10X with no parallax adjustment and an elevation dial suits me just fine. I'd be perfectly content with a Luep VX III 2.5-10x40 with an M1 elevation dial IF they had better springs (zero tends to move around if abused).

Re: S&B or Leupold

Thanks for the gen ctsmith! If any one has any info regarding
The SB Precission Hunter 4-16x50 FFP (P3) ,ie turret travel,
are they mil/mil or mil/ MOA with the reticle?
Please let me know. This info seems after hard to come by.
Does any one here own one? Or have you owned one?
How did you rate it!

Re: S&B or Leupold

I had two of them at the same time and ctsmith is correct -- the PH has limited elevation travel once you zero it. Mine had 0.1mil clicks and had P3 (mil) reticles with no illumination. Frankly, this is a nice scope for hunting, but it's not intended for long range target shooting. I sold both of them because they just don't cut it for shooting beyond a few hundred yards.

Re: S&B or Leupold

HI one eye jack,
Thanks for your input, I you could give me some info on the mounting system you used
And your Max effective distance you managed to achieve,
I would greatly appretiate it! I'm not in to compition shooting I'm doing this as a challenge project, to see how much I can squeeze out of the Old Husqvarna 30-06 build in 1954. With 1640 action. I was hoping for 800m but will be well pleased with 600m
Will the S&B PH get me there?

By the way what power where youS&B's and what did you replace your 2 S&B PH 's with?
