the hawke varmint 6-24x44mm is what i was considering until i saw the thickness of the cross hairs. i also like how that scope has the mil scaled for 10x so that it provides finer holdovers when on 11+ power. i currently have a thicker mil reticle and want thinner and more marks to help me with .22 precision. i do not want illumination unless it is located in the side parralax spot; otherwise it looks terrible. yes aesthetics mean enough to me that i am okay with missing out on a viable option if it has an unsymmetrical housing. i also do not want to deal with adjustable objective; i have one and it adds to much bulk in my opinion.

if someone has the scope they recommend could you put up an image on the max magnification so i can better assess the crosshairs thickness? maybe place a universal object in the reticle for us to better determine the thickness?

as of now the hawke 6-24x44 is just about perfect for my needs but i would like to find finer cross hairs if i can for a similar price; e.g. <300$. does anyone have any images of the varmint on 24x so i can see the thickness of the cross hairs?

Re: fine cross hair 1/2 mil reticles in ~6-24 power?

I have the Hawke 6-24 on my custom 10/22 and don't find the crosshairs to be very large and aren't nearly as obtrusive as the BDC lines that my Nikon Monarch has. I've shot it out to 100 yds and have no issues with the reticle thickness. I'll be heading to the range in the next few days and I'll try to take a few pictures through the scope.

As for other options, check out the Mueller 8.5-25x44 and 8-32x44 scopes. They get very high marks over at RimfireCentral.com The 8.5-25x44 has an adjustable objective while the 8-32x44 is side focus and gets rave reviews. There is a link to pictures through the reticles on their site. Both are carried by JoeBob Outfitters and Midway USA.

I'm not home right now, but I do have the Varmint sf. Mine's the 12x, though. The reticle lines are not very fine -- I would say that they are slightly heavier than my Nikon Prostaff BDC and my Nikon M223-BDC600. Something like the Vortex reticles will probably be finer.

When I get home, if no one else has by then, I will take a picture and post. I use mine on a pellet gun. The eye-box is pretty small, but I have gotten used to it.

i am very interested in that image if you could generate it i would be much obliged. is your 6-24x the varmint model?

i have also opened my mind to the notion of dialing my shoots and the muellers have my attention again. are these scopes dialing systems good enough to count on in a hunting one shoot scenario?

i will take you up on the 12x image so i can compare it to what i have now at 12x. i understand the 1/2 mil at 24x will be finer but the comparison could still help me.

Here's the image of the reticle. Sorry it's framed weirdly -- it's my cell phone, and it was difficult to get the phone to focus on the reticle. To the eye, the target looks fine, so don't use this image as an estimate of the resolution of the scope.

This is at about 10x, but I would expect the reticle to appear similarly in the 24x version (the target would just be closer).

Anyway, the reticle lines measure 0.1mil, with the 1mil hash marks measuring about 0.3. Here's a broader view:

thank you for taking the time to produce that image. i was hoping to see finer crosshairs but need to remind myself the primary purpose of this rig; hunting. i still think the varmint gets the node but i would like to have finer reticle for when i target shoot and chase small groups.

Re: fine cross hair 1/2 mil reticles in ~6-24 power?

I have the 4-16x Varmint, and according to the manual the dots are .208 mil at 10x. I'm not crazy about the reticle as the lines are a bit thicker than most fine line stadia mil reticles in higher quality scopes, but i've still got it on a Magnum Research Picuda 22 LR. and it works just fine, for all the varminting i do, and some long-range plinking out to 300ish.

Re: fine cross hair 1/2 mil reticles in ~6-24 power?

Here's what I came up with today looking through my 6-24x44 SF. I could get a pretty good view through my digital SLR but it wouldn't focus. I couldn't get a very good view through the Sony point and shoot, but it would focus. If that wasn't bad enough glare was unbelievable and mirage was pretty bad at 100. Photos aren't very good, but you'll get the idea. It looks a like better in person. All were taken at 24X with a 3/4" black dot near the cross hairs for size reference. I did some measuring with the original pictures and the thin part of the cross hair covers 1/16" @ 25 yards, 1/8" @ 50 yards and 3/16" at 100 yards.

thank you for sharing your data. im okay with the thicker lines for having more accurate holdovers out beyond 50 yards. ill continue to search more. thank you again for your time.

these images and accompanying information is all i could have asked for, thank you. i think the lines are about as thick as i have now but i will welcome the added precision the extra marks will encourage.

i just can not justify spending ~1000 to get the finer crosshairs i am after, right now. i had a vortex viper pst ffp 4-16 and was happy to replace that with my 70 dollar utg scope. maybe with time ill warm up to the idea of spending a lot more for exactly what i want. time will tell and thank you all for your contributions.
