Uneven Bolt Wear-AR 308

Hey all-
After exactly 37 rounds through my new DPMS LR-308 SASS, I'm noticing uneven (not sure if it should be called excessive or not) wear at the 12 o'clock position on the bolt at the locking lugs, when the BCG is removed from the weapon and the bolt is back in the BCG (as if in battery inside the receiver).

Does anybody have any experience with this, do I worry or just keep shooting?

Thanks!

Re: Uneven Bolt Wear-AR 308

Pics would be helpful to determine if it is "average" wear/tear or something more sinister. It could just be a little bit of finish wear (its just parkerizing) or it could be indicative of an out-of-spec bolt, barrel extension, etc. Could be a burr or other anomaly inside the extension rubbing/wearing on the bolt head. Anyway...its all academic speculation at this point.

Post up some pics and we'll go from there. Otherwise...keep shooting and inspect the bolt/receiver extension often for signs that the wear you are seeing is worsening.

ETA: Just saw your reply about not knowing how to upload/post pics. Just take the pics, save them to your computer. Then go to a hosting site like tinypic, upload them, then copy/paste the image tag that the site will give you into a new post...they should show up them. The image tag will look something like *
* without the "*".

OK, here goes my attempt at this: If these aren't clear enough or anything I can do more fast:

This is my 9-shot group (had to figure out where it was going first) with 168 gr. GMM, as fast as I could reacquire my aim point. Low left shot was definitely my error, as well as probably a few others

Clearly, the weapon is out shooting me...

Ohh, you've gotta tag it as an image for the forum server... gotcha.

Thanks guys, another small part of my SH education is complete

What do you think about the bolt lugs? They problematic (as in uneven enough to worry) or just breaking in?

Re: Uneven Bolt Wear-AR 308

Looks normal to me, but I brake shit constantly so... lol

Re: Uneven Bolt Wear-AR 308

Heh, you too? I won't worry about it yet. As I said, rifle is doing just fine considering how fast I was attempting to reacquire and fire at 100 yds...

Re: Uneven Bolt Wear-AR 308

If you're not having any mechanical issues or loss of accuracy then I wouldn't think it's an issue. AR's wear on the finish even when well lubricated.

Re: Uneven Bolt Wear-AR 308

Good points, Broker, thanks!

Do you recommend lubing the locking lugs or stopping at the body of the bolt (where it slides into carrier) or not even that much?

Re: Uneven Bolt Wear-AR 308

Lube the back of the lugs (portion that faces to the rear). Use a grease like TW25b, Frog Lube, etc. Something that will stick around for a few shots.

You don't have enough time on the rifle for the parts to wear in yet. I would not worry about wear patterns until you get a couple hundred through it. Then you can break it down and look at the wear. Still, if you are getting good accuracy, no need to dink with it.

+1 on this advice.

From looking at the pics...I don't see anything out of the ordinary at this point. Run it wet for at least a couple hundred more rounds then reassess. Since you've got pics, you can do a compare/contrast on wear now vs. then and see what's up. I don't think it'll end up being anything other than the typical break-in/initial wear and it won't progress any further or cause you any damage/problems down the road.
