So I had a thought pop into my brain the other day that my spotting scope is a useful tool in the tool box but it would make more sense for me to have a kestrel and a leica 1600 range finder. I take the spotting scope with ever shoot but I find myself not using it as much as I become a better shooter and find myself making more hits. I find a lot of the times I am missing because of miscalculated ranges or possible weather data errors/inability to pull weather data for shooter/strelock. What are your thoughts on this. I feel I am making the right move. What did people use before Kestrels and rangefinders?

You need to do some reading here. That's like asking... "How do I shoot long distance?" There are literally so many factors involved that 100's of threads have been done discussing the finer points.

MIL dot / MOA reticles...there are real simple mathematical formula's to judge the distance to the target based on (A) the size of the target and (B) the # of mils/hash marks on the reticle. Use the search tool over there --------->

Yes, I currently do this now. We use 10ft poles attached to our targets out to 800 yards for maximum ranging accuracy. I would like the range finder for quick target ranging for unknown target sizes(animals). have you though of converting to maps? get a detailed map of your AO / shooting place / hunting grounds whatever it is...then figure out where YOU are compared to a point of interest you can SEE then figure out on the map how far away it is.
example, on my map i can tell there is a power line 1200yds away from me. using the map as reference i can say landmark (1) is 600yds away, landmark (2) is 400yds, etc..
if an animal is near landmark 1 or 2 well then i know how far away it is...

I wonder if there would be a way to set up some sort of accurate grid system? say 100/50 yard grid.

Right, I could use the bluetooth but I am fine entering the data manually. I'm not sure it's worth the extra money to me.

this is something i keep playing with in google earth. You can turn on a grid overlay i've just never tried printing it before...
