I was calling on a cattle farm the day before yesterday and got my first double. Rifle was a CZ 527 in .223 using 40gr Vmax's @ 3800fps.

I had placed the Foxpro(using scream n rabbit sound) towards the base of a small valley and overlooked it from one side. Immediately after I started to call the first one sprinted out from the fence/evergreen trees across the valley. He hung up for a sec and I shot. First one down. He was flopping so I put another in him.

My adrenalin is pumping at this point but I manage to switch the call to the adult cottontail sound(while trying to switch to Kiyi) and the second one popped up from the bottom of the valley on my side. Bang, he goes down and is flopping. Send another one into him. Tough damn coyote.

This was an amazing experience and kind of shook my world in terms of coyote hunting. I always thought coyotes would run off at the sound of a gun shot, not to mention two. I will always keep the call on now after downing a coyote.

2nd coyote of the season(up to 18 now since 9-6-12). Yes those are his guts in his mouth. He pulled them out.

Naw, I just had one run off before. If they're still moving I don't wanna leave anything to chance. I'm not really keeping pelts right now unless they're prime. These were two mangy, tic ridden yutes.

Re: Got my first double coyote kill/s(graphic pics)

I shot this coyote a week and half ago from 251yds. In this pic you can see the hill I was on in the back ground. Wind was around 10-15mph right-to-left and i was shooting light 40gr Vmax bullets. It was broadside to me with the head facing right and I aimed right at the base of its neck. The bullet dropped in right behind its shoulder(where I intended).

Re: Got my first double coyote kill/s(graphic pics)

On this set I had my back to a downed tree and was positioned towards a large wooded area adjoined to a field. I set the call and decoy about 60yds to the left from the large tree on the right(in first pic). The dog came in after only a few mins of calling. It snaked in from behind that big tree and I dropped it at 100yd ish. This was two weeks ago.

Re: Got my first double coyote kill/s(graphic pics)

This was the coyote above that bit onto itself. 110gr Vmax is devastating on coyotes.

It was dark and I hit it low as it was bouncing through a soy bean field. Kept call running and saw another disappearing through prairie grass.

Re: Got my first double coyote kill/s(graphic pics)

This is the best coyote of the season so far. It was probably 40-45lbs and had a beautiful coat. The spot didn't look that promising at first but obviously it worked out.

It was a corn field and it had a series of small rolling slopes. In order to avoid losing a coyote at the bottom of a slop you'd have to position on the lowest hill. The field connected to an area containing large prairie grass, brush piles, and overgrowth. I placed the call probably 15-20ft away from the area and proned on the lowest hill(no bipod or sling). After 10-20 seconds of calling I see a white face in the tall grass(you can see in pic below). I didn't see it pop up, it was just there. I had to move my rifle and was able to move my lower body freely as it was concealed by the slope. I aimed at its chest(facing me) and squeezed the trigger. Nothing. Safety was engaged. Doh! I slowly and quietly manipulated it to off. At this point it was starring right at me. Bang, instant death from the 40gr Vmax @ 3800 from 50yds give or take.

This was probably the 2nd nicest coyote of the season so far. It might even be nicer. Another VERY fast coyote. Appeared on the scene within seconds of the dying rabbit sequence started. Had to hit it on the run and again while it was doing the death dance.

I'd really like to get a video camera and start recording some sets. I have a regular digital camera with a video setting I'm gonna try and record with. Need to camo my tripod. Any ideas on where the best spot to position the camera?

I'm getting access to a 250 acre farm tomorrow and will be setting up a game camera. Supposedly there are tons of coyotes out there. More action incoming. Crow season starts soon.

Re: Got my first double coyote kill/s(graphic pics)

That's hauling the mail! I know a guy who shot an '06 using the 110 vmax's and it would destroy them songdogs. Longest kill he had was 462 measured yards on a yote.

Damn near took his whole head off.....He claims that's where he was aiming, me thinks the wind drifted him a bit!

Keep posting the kill shots. It helps us live vicariously through you; when we can't hunt.

Re: Got my first double coyote kill/s(graphic pics)

I shot this one with a 110gr vmax as well but it didn't blow up as well. It was a neck shot so there probably wasn't as much to explode in there. My friend shot and missed, I turned to see it start to bug out and barked at it. Fired and hit it in the neck.

It evacuated in the process.

Re: Got my first double coyote kill/s(graphic pics)

I have some 215gr Barnes TSX bullets and 200gr Nosler ballistic tips(@ 3400fps) loaded up for the .338LM. I plan to shoot a coyote with it very soon. Will def post pics of that.

I've shot a possum with one of the Barnes TSX bullets and it just piked through. I'm hoping the Nosler will expand better.

Re: Got my first double coyote kill/s(graphic pics)

Looking at the pics i just realized my sling is on backwards lol. I don't usually sling up unless I'm expecting a longer shot and there's high grass.

Went to the new farm today. Got two younger coyotes in the same set. The one closer was 15-20yds from the call when I shot it. I cranked the call up and the 2nd one showed up seconds after in tall grass in front of me about 100yds away. Zoomed in and shot it.

I feel a little bad killing young dogs because you never get to see their full potential. They bit a calf on the ass a couple weeks ago and it's extermination time.

Re: Got my first double coyote kill/s(graphic pics)

Got another one Friday. Called for 2mins and this guy comes sprinting in from the right. I stop him with a bark and shot him behind the front shoulder. I he didn't spin but kind of hopped up and down biting it. I shot again in the same spot and it went down.

While I continued to call there was a tree of about 10 birds(not scavenger birds) to the left and they kept flying over to the coyote, hoover for a second, and then fly back to the tree. They did this for a few mins after it went down. Weird.

When I walked up too examine the scene I found that the second bullet hit it in the ear and exited through the top of its head. The skull cavity was pretty hollowed out. Bullets do crazy things.

If i go from sun up to sun down I'll usually stop for lunch and then call some crows during the hottest part of the day. It's also fun sometimes to just hoof everything in there and then try to call a coyote, and then crows if nothing responds.

I really dig sitting in shadows in my barn with a can on the 10/22 and pick the crows off when they're in aggravating the ducks.

They'll come to eggs on the ground, that I bait the foxes/'yotes with too.

Cool pix.

That's a good idea. Do you shoot them with sub sonic ammo? If so what kind and does it cycle your bolt?

I have a CZ bolt action .22 I use with subs/suppressed. I try and tree them real close to me and already have the gun up and just pluck them down one by one. It's real quiet but the rounds I'm using(rem subsonics) don't perform as well as I'd like. Most times it will kill them or at least cripple them bad, which draws in more as you know
smile.gif
. I'd prefer to be able to drop them cold with a body shot though. I've been looking at that 3 segment reactive .22lr load but haven't tried it yet...

Re: Got my first double coyote kill/s(graphic pics)

Early days i shot rem sub's and still do some, but it's so dirty. For the last couple years, been shooting cci sub-sonics.

No problem cycling the 10/22 with the gemtech on it. got a threaded tacsolutions 16 in bbl on it now.

I'm fitting an EABCO 1/9" twist for the Aguila 60grns to a 10/22 Charger pistol. Those 60's are bad ass and whishper quiet. The good lady put a 'yote down at 60 yds, one shoulder and one thru both ribcages/lungs. You just have to spin them up to stabilize them.

Here's my favorite close in shooter; camp45 from SRT, 230grn blackhills HP's.....it sounds like a low powered air gun when you shoot it!

Very nice. I have a similar setup with .300 blk and 220gr SMKs(in a 9in barreled SBR AR) and 240gr SMKs in a savage bolt gun. Super quiet and good to 200yds.

101_1849_zpsbc417a8a.jpg

That's an amazing story about your lady taking the coyote with the 60gr subs. I've been looking at those but would have to rebarrel like you said. I've thought about building a SBR AR upper and just using a 1-7 or 1-8 AR barrel but don't really like the conversions that use the mock chamber. I'm sure I'll go down that route soon though.

Re: Got my first double coyote kill/s(graphic pics)

Re: Got my first double coyote kill/s(graphic pics)

I like the shit outta that little charger pistol. But thought it'd be pretty badass throwing those 60's out of a pistol with a 16 bbl & can. The only reason it came off the 10/22 rifle was it's an iron bull and weighs a friggin ton and mama wasn't happy.

What twist you got on that bolt gun? How do you like the 240's on meat? That's a mean ass looking tool you got in that bolt action.

Cheers,

If you 10/22, get that blackdog 50rd drum. It works and you have effin mayhem on your hands when canned up! It's fookin' stoopid fun. I may have to get another one for a his/hers set up!>

Re: Got my first double coyote kill/s(graphic pics)

For a really good call...try recording sound of a human baby.
Some time ago I was reading a local hunting newspaper/magazine. I guy was was calling in coyotes with no success. His wife and baby were nearby, staying warm inside the vehicle.

Nothing was happening, and eventually his wife came up to where he was positioned. The baby started crying, and within 30 seconds a coyote was almost on top of them. Apparently the coyote was there all along, but did not fully trust the calls. When the real "distressed baby" sound was available, the coyote could not help himself.

That's just CREEPY! But, if your critters are call shy, or educated, it might be worth a try.

It gives credence to using different calls at different times of the year. Sometimes a challenge is better than distress.

I heard read that story(or similar) in the book The Coyote Hunter by Don Laubach and Merv Griswold. Crazy shit.

Distress anything usually works. The thing is with distressed rabbit is that everyone and their brother are using it. When I hunt on public land I usually use a combo of sounds and am prepared to stay longer on set. Worked yesterday at least
laugh.gif

11-26-123_zps299d2904.jpg

I worked REAL hard yesterday to get this guy above. I hunt pubic land for the most part and that it seems quite wrung out. The first spot(around 7am) I called had these damn dogs on it so I had to trek a mile into the location to get away from them. I have used dogs in the past as bait if they're smaller and followed me. These were larger dogs and would have scared/killed a coyote.

I botched the first kill and relearned a lesson. I didn't set the call off of my line of sight. I usually set it to the side(from where I think they're gonna come from) so I can get a broadside shot on it. I set this one in between me and it's trail. It was running fast. I tried to stop it with lip squeaking and it paused for a millisecond and bolted. I fired a few times but missed. I was pissed and on a mission the rest of the day to redeem myself lol.

So I hunt ALL day without seeing another coyote and on the last set(which i about didn't go to) this guy pops out from the right along a fence line and then moves into the field towards the call. My heart was racing and I was trying to breathe and keep myself calm. It held up a couple times but I just stayed real still. Once it got about 10yrds from the call I got my scope on him and stopped him with what came out sounding like an owl's "who." I intended for it to be a quiet bark but I was real wired. Either way it stopped it and I dropped it into a pile probably less than 40yds from me. Success!

It was dark(hence the shitty pic) and I was tired. I almost drove into another state trying to get one. It's super tough to find places to hunt these days. No one trusts anyone. The tradition of predator hunting is dying out. I made up some business cards to hand out with my number and student ID(on other side) but they haven't yielded any new spots yet...

</div></div>

Thanks! It is a 1-8 twist barrel. It shoots right at MOA with 240gr SMKs and I have not killed anything with it yet. Also, as you probably noticed I have a SS 10x42 on it and a higher fixed magnification is not optimal for hunting. I need a lighter/smaller stock and need to work some kinks out with the magazine.

I killed a skunk with the AR .300blk but i used barnes 110gr TAC-TX FB bullet at around 2200fps. It opened it up good but did not explode the thing.

I went hunting with a friend yesterday and did the whole sun up to sun down thing. We hunted all day without seeing a coyote. It was opening season for firearms deer and public land was swarming with shitheads. One group of individuals, in their early 20s, were DRIVING into walk-in land. They came driving over the a hill after my handicapped(who struggles to get into these sets) and I had trekked 1/4 mile into the set. I had a talk with them. It's getting tougher and tougher to find goods spots here in Kansas.
smirk.gif

On the second to last set of the day a friend and I setup in a cow pasture. Wind was left-to-right at about 8-10mph. My friend has a harder time getting into position and only walked in part way. I setup by a fence line with the call to my left approximately 30yds. After 4-5mins of calling with DSG Cottontail I see movement about 500-600yds in front of me. I glass it and see one coyote running down into a mild valley. It is far enough away that I have time to glass behind it. I see another head peeking over the hill. My heart is jumping out of my chest at this point as I retrain my scope on the closer coyote. It was closing ground fast and I only had to wait a few seconds(it seemed longer at the time). Right as it got into 150yds I breathed in a partial breath and squeezed the shot. It struck her in the right side of her chest/shoulder. It destroyed the front shoulder and leg. She did her death dance and I continued to call for the other one. It was long gone.

Re: Got my first double coyote kill/s(graphic pics)

I got my 25th coyote of the season about three hours ago. I went to the range to test some new .338 Lapua loads and figured I'd try and shoot a coyote with it after.

I hoofed the heavy ass rifle about a mile into these flint hills and setup. It was on a shallow valley. I was on one side and the call was on the other. I had called for 25mins and decided to leave. Before I shake out I usually look ALL around and make sure I'm not missing a sneaky coyote lingering around behind me. I notice a dark spot at around 600-700yds away. I glass it and sure enough it's a coyote. I prone back down and get the reticle on it. I had been using female coyote bark howls but switched it to rabbit distress so it wouldn't be as cautious about coming in. It did just that.

I lost it behind a hill at around 400yds and dialed my scope power down. I located it as it popped up on the other side. It started down the hill towards the call but hung up at around 330yds(I walked it out). She was facing towards me and was kind of sitting. I aimed at its nose and sent the Barnes 210gr TSX(@3100fps) away. The animal dropped immediately. I expected to walk up on a mess but it appears the bullet went through and through without much explosive damage. The 110gr vmax from .308 transferred much more energy. I need to find a thin jacketed .338 bullet that will blow up more.

Re: Got my first double coyote kill/s(graphic pics)

I shot a coyote last night and a bobcat this afternoon. Both with the CZ 527 .223 40gr Vmax.

For the coyote I was set up inside a ceder tree. I was real tired and was kind of nodding off while the call was going. After about 7-8mins of calling I see the coyote pop up from my right at around 2 O'clock. I kind of snap to, but didn't get the usual adrenaline rush(from being tired). I was holding the remote between my legs and started it back up. I've been using Snowshoe HP and it works good(even though we don't have them here). It headed towards the call. I barked and he hung up for a second but kept going. I pulled the trigger and it hit him in the lung area or in the top of the bowels. It got up and started to head like it was going to run so I put another one into it's shoulder and fur went flying in the air, back onto me. It was down.

12-10-1220_zps9593e9dd.jpg

I got the bobcat in an area with a ton of evergreen trees and foot high prairie grass. It was walk-in public hunting and there were a couple trailers on the property in the front and a bunch of run down cars and crap where I setup at. I set the call in the middle of a clearing and again sat inside a ceder. They block the wind and I activate all the pine needles to block my scent. I call for 15-20mins and nothing. I stand up to look around before I called the set and I saw this shadowy figure LOW CRAWLING towards my call. By the time I saw it it had seen me and it started to head in the other direction. I fired one round and it struck it in the belly. I saw some tissue fly off just as it bolted DEEP into a brush pile of thorny bushes/trees. I spent 30-45mins crawling into this thing. I set my rifle aside and was crawling through on my hands and knees with my handgun lik went and tagged it and am going to do something with it. I don't know if the hide can be savaged or not with the big hole in the belly. I might skin and tan the hide.

I shot it in the gut and they were hanging out so I just cut them out. I didn't cut the hide at all.

Re: Got my first double coyote kill/s(graphic pics)

I had the longest kill of the season yesterday. Just so happened to be using my 10.5in suppressed SBR AR-15. 330yd shot. I held 6mins and let it lose. There was snow on the ground and i was able to follow some fresh tracks. Eventually they led to a valley and I decided to set the call down and call them out.

After running the call for 5mins i see movement on a hill far away. I look through the scope and see two coyotes. One was scratching itself and the other was standing there watching it. They aren't responding to my call so i switch sounds. The like it even less and start to walk the other way. I switch to prone and crank up the magnification. Held in between the first and second mil-dot on my scope and tagged it. The bullet impact was good and loud due to the suppressor. It also let out a big yip and threw itself around before expiring. It was a VERY mangy coyote and i wasn't able to harvest fur. My friend was sitting two feet from my firing position and appears as a small dot in the back of the picture.

Here is the firing position view. The coyote was behind the 2nd line of trees on the second hill all the way in the back.

Re: Got my first double coyote kill/s(graphic pics)

I got number 29 today. I shot it at 30yds, it jerked back and then ran straight towards me. I've had this happen before when shooting them suppressed. Still wild when it happens. I shot it a second time and it hit the ground around 10-15ft from me. I just mounted a pair of offset 1 O'clock sights the other day for close up. They work good.
