    Hey folks.

Had a bolt fluted then cerakoted... or duracoated, the smith said it would be one or the other.

I'm not very familiar with either finish as I've never used either.

I run the bolt and part of it gets rubbed off.

I take my finger nail to it and can rub off the coating.

Surely this is not normal right? Possible the light coating of oil I had on it destroyed it?

It almost sounds like he used DuraCoat and did a shitty job of it at that. I painted my entire barreled action in my basement with DuraCoat and it's more durable than what this guy did from the sounds of it.

Sounds alot like he did a bad job using DuraCoat and probably did not bake it like he was suppose to. Ceracoat is far more durable than DuraCoat. I would take it back and make him redo it in ceracoat if you paid for what you got.

Sounds like either a really bad duracoat job, or maybe something like alumahyde. I have had a couple of ceracoat finished bolts, and they are more durable than factory Remington blue.

I'd have him refinish it for sure, and if he can do a proper ceracoat job I would opt for it, otherwise I'd send it elsewhere for finishing.

    Sounds like poorly applied duracoat.

If it's coming off like powder, he didn't use enough hardener.

If it's flaking, it's the result of poor prep.

Properly done, Duracoat is pretty decent stuff. Not as good as Cerakote, but not bad either.

I wonder if perhaps the metal wasn't properly cleaned before the spray job. It's flaking quite a bit.

Yes, paid for the job but having doubts as to whether he'd do it right the second time.

Anyone know how to remove this bad job if its duracoat?

Get some Klean Strip Paint Remover, some steel wool, a can of Powder Blast or similar degreaser, oh and some gloves then go to town. Spray it down with Klean Strip, wait for it to bubble up, use the steel wool to remove, finish it off with the spray degreaser...bada bing bada boom a clean bolt. That's what I've done in the past anyway.

    Thank you... I'll try that.

Of course, now i'm thinking about just getting a new bolt and having everything trued. :p
