Small base dies?

I have never needed small base dies for my AR's. However my buddy has had two uppers, don't know the brands, and one was so tight a round wouldn't chamber. A gunsmith had to re-ream it. Now he has another that cases stick in the chamber. Obviously something was wrong with the first upper. The second one we're not so sure. Are small base dies recommended? As I said I have never needed them. Does any here use them? Thanks in advance.

Re: Small base dies?

If cases sized in a standard sizer are too large to chamber readily then a Small Base sizer die should be helpful. ??

If you take a few simple measurements, you'll see where the problem is. Just compare one factory round to one of your fired rounds. This shows your actual chamber clearance with factory loads.

Compare case width just above the web of your case, and then compare shoulder height. Keep in mind that a fired case is exactly like a casting of your chamber (minus a few ten thousandths of an inch).

Do the same with your handloads, and you'll see how much chamber clearance your handloads have. Too many shooters assume they need a SB die, when the real problem is something else.
