I have a leupold 6.5-20x50 vx3 with varmint hunters reticle. Only target knobs now. Looking at the vortex viper pst FFP. Or swfa.

Any opinions on them? Will be shooting from 300 to 1500 yards. Thanks

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

I recommend the Vortex PST 6-24 with either mil/mil or moa/moa knobs. I used to have one on my competition rifle, and it always worked flawlessly.

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

I see they usually sell for 950 new but several have been sold used here recently. Makes me wonder if people are unsatisfied with them?

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

I seriously doubt it, I have owned one, but I've used probably around 6 or so. They are just great scopes all around in my opinion and experience.

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

I guess I'll be scouring the classifieds then, hear they have a great warranty too.

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

I don't know why others are selling their PST's but I'm going to be selling mine not because I am dissatisfied with the product rather I am so satisfied with it that I am looking to upgrade to the HD version. I have the 1-4 HD on my ar and liked it do much I decided that I need the HD for my long rifle. I highly recommend the FFP version. Good luck.

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

What's the main difference in hd and regular? Thanks

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

In my opinion the HD has better glass (read optical clarity is increased) and 10 mil turrets (so if you shoot to 1000 yards or longer one twist of the turret is about all you need). There is less magnification 5x20 instead of 6x24. The magnification is not a plus or minus just a difference. It's also 1000$ more that the PST. Your basically paying for better glass as in all higher end optics.

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

Sounds similar to nf high speed turrets? $1000 more opens up many options in glass I suppose

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

An extra $1000 does more but the jump is not worth it to some people. The jump from $500 to $1000 buys you a superior upgrade in optics. Going from $1000 to $2000 is an increase in quality but not as drastic. It depends on what your using it for and how picky you are.

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

The Vortex Viper PST is a quality optic, and definately worth the money.

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

Just reread your original post from 700 yards and longer you will notice the better glass

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

The better glass in the $2000 range? A couple of my shooting partners have nightforce and mark 4s. Have looked into those but I need to stay close to $1000.

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

Thanks for all the replies so far. Very helpful in my decision.

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

I have a PST, it's SFP. I really like the scope. to me, the glass is really good. The scope works very well mechanically, and with the Warranty Vortex has, it's kind of hard to go wrong

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

The sfp are very reasonably priced too. Same glass as the ffp?

as far as I know the glass is the same on the FFP and SFP models. For my purposes, I wasn't in a position to spend the extra hundred or so on the FFP, and the SFP will work just fine for what I need it for

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

I see the used sfp a lot cheaper than used ffp for some reason?

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

Not much info on sightron. Will have to research those. Same price range and viper pst ffp?

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

FFP are harder to make and generally considered an upgrade so they cost more. Some people like them and others prefer a SFP. I use mine for shooting long range matches and prefer the FFP for that.

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

I've never had an ffp scope. Does it take some getting used to?

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

No. As you increase the zoom the reticle grows in proportion to the zoom and decreases as you lower the zoom. That way no matter what power you are on the reticle is accurate in its markings for ranging purposes and click adjustments. Whereas as SFP is only accurate in its reticle markings at a set power level(normally 10 power). For other powers you must do a little math to make the turrets and reticle match.

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

Makes perfect sense now. Thanks for further explaining and simplifying it.

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

So many helpful people here. Great sight. Thanks guys. Keep the reviews and comments coming.

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

I'm going to throw Bushnell and Weaver into the mix. Both optics have good feedback and have a easier price tag if you buy used. Do a quick search on both the Bushnell and Weaver tactical lines and you will find a similar fan base to those with the Vortex.

I ended up going with the Bushnell for two reasons. First the Warranty is much better on the Bushnell. Second, I was able to get a higher magnification FFP scope with matching reticle/turrets for about $300 less than a Vortex.

When I looked at the Vortex PST in store I was not impressed with the feel of the scope. IMHO the glass was on par to optics in its price range and beyond. However the fit and finish of the scope felt fragile. I also try to stay away from optics made in the Philippians.

I have not been able to look through a SWFA, but I hear they have favorable reviews.

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

I saw the bushnell 4200 earlier. Ffp for really reasonable but didn't know much about them. Quality wise

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

Another vote for the PST. I love mine!

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

My 8-32x56 Sightron SIII has much better glass than the 4-16x50 PST I had earlier. My Sightron SIII has glass that looks pretty close to the 16x42 IOR I replaced it with. The PST is a good scope overall, but the glass is just good, not really good IMO.

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

An FFP reticle will cover more of your target. If you're going to shoot in tactical competitions then it's almost a must have. I'm just shooting off a bench so I wouldn't want one. To me it would just be a nuisance.

Because the reticle gets larger, correct?

Is it in the same price range?

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

Yes. It gets magnified as you turn up the power. It keeps all your measurements correct, but it also covers more of the target. An FFP reticle always covers the same amount of your target no matter what power setting it is on. As you turn up the power your target and your reticle both get larger.

An SFP reticle always remains the same so as you turn up the power only your target gets larger. So on higher power an SFP reticle covers less of your target then it does on low power.

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

An 8-32x56 Sightron costs more than an SFP PST and less then a FFP PST. So it's right in that price range.

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

I'm not sure I need the 32 magnification but if the glass is noticeably better, I would consider it.

Gotcha.

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

This is the one I have. It has the 1/8MOA dot and 1/8MOA adjustments. It also tracks perfectly. I'm very happy with it.

http://info.sightron.com/Riflescopes/SIII-Series/SIIISS832X56LRTD-TDT/

Their line thickness measurement is a typo. They have it listed at 0.12MOA on 32x when it is actually 0.012MOA on 32x. I let them know that it was wrong and they didn't seem to care.

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

I will be shooting steel with it at long ranges. Other applications as well. Not sure I would like the small adjustments though.

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

You can get it with 1/4MOA adjustments also. It comes in several models. That is just the best one for what I do.
I've never shot steel so I'm not sure what magnification is best. I would think that having more power would be good at long range, but being ignorant about that kind of shooting I don't actually know.

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

That's a good looking scope. Good reviews as well.

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

Bushnell 6-24x50 FFP..if you get the G2DMR from Liberty Optics it'll be cheaper than a PST 6-24 FFP and all you'll lack is illumination.

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

How much cheaper? Didn't realize the bushnell brand had such a following.

Go to Liberty Optics' website, place one in your "cart", and see for yourself...

Re: Good budget long range scope. $1000 under

Looks like another great option. $869 from there. Thanks guys
