Ok, not trying to make a Savage vs Remington thread, but those are the two rifle I am looking at. I was set on the Savage, when someone suggested this Remington. I don't know enough to decide which is "Better" but I am partial to the Savages.

Here is what I was planning to get.
Savage 308 20 5R THREAD BL $728.00 SHIPS FREE

And here is what was suggested to me.
Remington 700 SPS TACT AAC-SD 308 Hogue Overmolded Ghillie Green $645.00 SHIPS FREE

Really at a loss to know which would be better for a beginner.

What is the purpose of your purchase? Reason for asking is the 308 choice. Think you'll get more help on choice with more information as to what you and your new gun will be doing together.

I'm part of the uncool crowd that don't get to sit with the cool kids at the matches so I'll not recommend which action I prefer but either of the guns will do fine for you.

Re: First precision rifle.... Opinions wanted.

Both are good choices, but there are a few things to consider. If you plan on upgrading as you go, the Rem has more aftermarket parts available, it realy is the chevy 350 of rifles. Barrel swaps are a snap on the Savage, and IMO the trigger on the Savage is slightly better out of the box, the Rem can be tuned. Not fan of either stock, but both would be a great choice, my choice would be the Remington and plan on changing the stock, just my .02

Re: First precision rifle.... Opinions wanted.

My plan for the rifle is hunting and long range shooting mainly out to 600, but out to 1,000 eventually. My main goal is to learn. A buddy of mine with his B4 gets out of the Army in the summer and I want to be set up and know my way around it a bit by then so we can do some matches.

As far as .308, I know there are better calibers, but I am already set up to reload for it, and it's a cheap place to start.

Re: First precision rifle.... Opinions wanted.

Will mention that with a Savage calibers can easily be changed from varmint rounds like the 223, 22-250, 243 to long range match calibers like the 260, 6.5-47, 6.5-284, 7-08 and others. Anything that uses the short cases can be put on your action. This is something you can do at home on your kitchen table.

Remington, great action but unless you take up knitting and can be patient until your gun is returned with a new barrel and/or caliber you should get two so you'll have one to shoot while the other is being customized.

Just something else to look at in your quest.

Trying to find a model with that stock and a 20 inch barrel.

Re: First precision rifle.... Opinions wanted.

My choice would be Savage all the way, good trigger and a snap to change barrels on down the road. I would opt for at least a 24" barrel if you are planning to shoot beyond 600yd.

Re: First precision rifle.... Opinions wanted.

I love the Remington and went with a 700 myself. If I had to do it again, I would probably make the same choices. It has been a tack-driver right out of the box.

Having said that and already being a Remington owner, I would not mind getting a Savage and playing with it.

If I were you I would just flip a coin.. Its probably going to be the most pragmatic and least drama filled way to make this decision.

Buy a Model 11 Hog Hunter and a Choate Tactical from the vendor of your choice...WHAMMY

Re: First precision rifle.... Opinions wanted.

If you are going to scope the rifle and shoot it I would lean towards the savage. If you plan on upgrades in future which I would with either of these platforms I would go with the remington.

Re: First precision rifle.... Opinions wanted.

If you're going to shoot it right away and enjoy it; the savage

If you're going to upgrade it a bunch and shoot it; the savage

Re: First precision rifle.... Opinions wanted.

Better resale value on the Remington. That's just how it is.
