7 SAUM short barrel

Would like to hear some input on a 21" short barrel 7 saum? I would like to hear if anyone has built a shorter barrel 7 saum. Using a 168 gr bullet. I have a friend who has a varmint contour 25" and he's thinking of going shorter to lose some weight. No funds right now to rebarrel.

We figured 3/4 of a pound if he chops 4" off.

21" saum = 7-08.

I shoot a 7wsm with a 22.5" barrel. With proper load development, I can sling a 162 amax at right around 2950. You should be able to do the same with a 7saum. While certainly not up to the cartridge's potential, it is still a formidible combination and will get you out to 1400 yards+.

CBM, I can't see the SAUM being the same as a 7-08 with 21" barrel. Sure it loses speed but, but not that much. I would think it can get 2900 fps with the right powder, maybe 4350.

Sure, Im just saying; chopping off a magnum, defeats the purpose of said magnum. Your question is compounded by whatever barrel life you have left, spending the money to cut the barrel only to shoot a load more likely to burn it up doesnt seem like sound reasoning if money is your reason for not taking another course of action. You'll only bring on the rebarrell sooner.

If you are willing to sacrifice barrel life and load hot, you can still get fairly high velocities with a 22" barrel, but I would not go shorter than that. Otherwise, shorter, I would agree that you better off with a 7-08.

Alright, I've been doing some research and come to a consensus that maybe a short barrel might not be the best. Worst case would 22" would be minimum.
