I am looking for a left handed .308, but haven't had much luck in finding availability of said item.

I would prefer an Accuracy International or Sako TRG (not available in LH according to website), but something in that category will work.

I am looking at 1,000 yard competition in New Mexico at aprox. 6,500 asl if that matters.

I am honestly not familiar with the brands out there, I know of Savage, Accuracy International, Sako and Tikka.

I would like to keep cost around 5k.

Look on gunbroker for Remington 700vs left hand. For a while in the '90's they made this gun and it was offered in .308. It had a HS Precision stock. It is very much like the current 700 police. I had a couple in typical varmint calipers and they were good shooting factory guns

Have spent a considerable amount of time behind an HS Precision HTR (LE rifle, early 2007 build), that is LH. You might check and see if a LH HTR is available from current production.

I'd go along with this as well. I've got the only left handed 591 in the world and it is awesome. However, the delivery date on the first batch of 591's available for sale is still unknown. Right now I'd contact Jamie at Wolf Precision and get a BAT tactical lefthand.

Also, is there any particular reason you are going with 308? If you arn't married to the 308 I'd seriously consider building something else if you plan on being a competitive competition shooter.

AI said that they were working on a batch of LH AWs that were due here in August, and it now looks like they have been re-scheduled to arrive in the begining of the new year. Mile High would probably know more.

I have a Springfield M1A and am wanting ammunition compatibility. I would much prefer to my stock of Lake City Match versus stocking a new caliber.

You'll probably find your competitiveness with a 308 will be less than expected.

I will extend an offer to you since you're in Santa Rosa county. I'll bring you out to K&M and you can shoot my LH GAP rifle and see if you like the feel.

Well, maybe your FTR matches and your service rifle, but not so in the Tactical Rifle matches. It doesn't even compare at distance to 6.5mm or 6mm.

To the OP, you are going to win whether you get an AI or Custom. I have both and they each have their benefits. The AI is an amazing piece of machining which is the most rugged rifle you can buy with accuracy as good as a custom. Customs offer more 'customization' esp when it comes to the stock and trigger feel. A lot of people don't care for the AI two stage trigger-- most prefer the single stage jewel or timney. (once you get used to the AI tho you will love it.)

A 308 is like shooting a sail boat and the only tactical competitions a 308 has won in the last 5 years were the ones that were 308 only. I'm not trying to come off as a donkey but it's just how it is.

High BC+ Higher Velocity+less recoil= winning!

Seriously, to the OP, if you have a 5k budget then I would contact Roscoe at Louisiana Precision Rifles. I've got two lefties built by him and they are perfection...absolute hammers.

Go custom, no question. Can get a great rifle built for well under 5k.

I would take a serious look at a .260 Rem.

Just as a thought... I am a righty by trade but shoot rifle left handed. There is an advantage to a gun for a righty and shooting it left handed... You never have to take your hand away from the trigger.

This is true, I prefer right handed Anschutz rifles, am currently looking at a 54, the issue with the .308 and up is length of bolt throw and how the bolt handle comes real close to smacking me in the face.

I have done this with both a Turkish Mauser and Mosin M39, it is not a common occurrence but it happens enough that if I am going to drop the coin, I might as well do it right.

The needs of the Military are not the needs of a person that wants to win a 1000 yard shooting match. I'm new to the precision rifle game, but I have yet to see a 308 dominate any match. Times change, improvements are realized, welcome to the future.

Look im not putin down anyones are anybodys rifle on here that shoots in matches, ya'll probably got some great tack drivin rifle on here,, especially at 1000 yards. The 308 has been around awhile and won some national matches, and i know there are rifles out there that now will shoot better than the 308 at farther distance period,, I shoot a service rifle in 308, so this is my choice of cal.,, guess u could say i was marrried to the 308. lol.

This isn’t a high power/service rifle website and even the HP guys aren’t shooting a 308 by choice anymore. You can get it done with a 308 BUT there are better tools for the job.

Here is a couple of pictures from one extreme to the other.

The blue stocked rifle above is a F-Class open rifle. The action is a left hand Barnard Model P and the factory adjustable two stage or single stage trigger which is hard to beat. Caliber is .284win. Scope is 10-60x March. Stock is a McMillan Tooley MBR.

Next Picture above is a GAP built on a Badger Ordnance M2008 LH action of course. Barrel on it in the picture is a .308win. and my other barrel if I don't have to or want to shoot the .308win. is in .260 Rem. Stock is a McMillan with adjustable cheek piece. Badger bottom metal and AI mags etc......Scope is US Optics.

Having GAP, Roscoe at Lousiana Precision Rifles, Mark at SAC, or Mark at Spartan Rifles, or buying a AI rifle etc...will all serve you well and I left a ton of builders out.......

Same goes for the action. GAP, AI, Badger M2008, Surgeon, Barnard, Bat Machine and even a trued up Rem. will all serve you well. Really comes down to personal taste.

If you want a .308win. so you have ammo compatibility for your M1A then go for it. The .308win. is a good round but with that being said....Yes the 6mm's and 6.5mm's cut the wind better and shoot some what flatter than a .308win.

My first across the course bolt gun and prone rifle was chambered in 6mm Rem. My current prone rifle with sling is chambered in 6x47 Lapua.

With two guys laying on the line with equal skill but one guy has a 6mm or 6.5mm and the other guy has a .308win. I'll put my money on the 6mm or 6.5mm shooter for having a higher X count.
