The Big Bastard from APA is the best brake Ive ever used (fairly limited experience). Had it on my 300WM. People on the line next to me hated me, but i LOVED it.

I put a PWS PRC brake on my .308 bolt gun. It has served me well.

Surefire MB762SSAL/RE is what I have on all my .308s. It does a number on felt recoil.

Been happy with both our Ross and Harrell's brakes on our guns. Work great but since they are inexpensive they get overlooked.
The Ross doesn't have holes on the bottom so good for prone shooters, the Harrell's has holes all the way around so does kick up a bit of dust.

I've used the FSC30 and while it's a nice brake and does a great job of reducing recoil, it throws debris all over the place.
The Primary Weapons PRC was designed for use on a precision rifle and it's every bit as good at reducing the amount of felt recoil as the FSC30 but it doesn't have the terrible ground signature that the FSC30 does so you won't be spraying debris everywhere.

I'd also tell you that people who say you don't need a brake on a 308 are fully allowed to have their opinion but they do still help reduce recoil. If you can reduce recoil you reduce fatigue after long days shooting that is fairly valuable in my book. I also have a harder time when shooting prone in that I have a nerve that runs down my clavicle that causes me issues. Without Holland's brake I was tired of shooting my 14 pound LTR after about 20 rounds. After the brake 300 rounds in a 2 day class was no big deal. Yes it made that much difference! I didn't think it would but it did. I just hope that when I finally get the stamp on my suppressor that I don't give up too much of that recoil reduction.

Another vote for the RAD. On my Savage 10PC 20" barrel I'd swear that the recoil is less than my that on my AR. I was really surprised at the reduction in recoil, but the S.O.B. really barks, especially if you happen to be beside the rifle when it's fired.
One other plus is that I can easily install or take it off. I didn't worry about it being timed perfectly. It's close, but I do have about 2/3 of a turn of threads still showing. I wanted to try a brake, but didn't want to bother with a smith matching a brake to my already threaded barrel. This has worked well for me and I don't care how it looks.

Get a JEC and never look back. I have used all of the above with the exception of one. I have a unique circumstance and I know brakes.

hrm. I think the JEC's actually pushed things in the opposite direction. Holland's brake used to have holes in the top and he found better performance by removing the top holes in the second generation.

I have the same brake on my 16" LWRC REPR and it works well.

Yes, I had one on 300wsm before selling it. It recoiled less than my 11 pound 223 all while lauching 190 berger VLD's.

Another vote for the APA Little Bastard brake. I have them on both my .308 and 6.5x47 rifles - not so much for the recoil reduction aspect but since both barrels are threaded to take cans and since some sort of thread protector would be needed I figured I may as well put them on instead of the plain thread protector and pick up any benefits.

While they might not be the most effective, I like the muzzle brakes that can be turned to match your barrel contour perfectly.
I have a Badger Thruster on my .308 and I really like it.

Glad to hear it! For me it just seemed to almost feel like it was recoiling downward rather than up and back.

Thanks everyone the main reason I'm getting a muzzle break was also to eventually put a can on. I already had a threaded barrel so why not take advantage of it.

The Rad brake, APA little bastard and Roedale Precision brakes have all worked great for me. If you want no gunsmithing and have a threaded barrel then RAD is the answer. If you want it timed then go with APA. If you have no threads then get a Roedale (if you can find one).

Have used all, all work well. They are nice for recoil control but my buddy argues "good form works well for recoil control and is cheaper!" Cant argue with him.

I have the Surefire on my LaRue OBR 18" and it does a great job and as mentioned above, doesn't blow crap all over the place. It's a very effective brake. I've shot another gun with the AAC with equally good performance. I'll be switching to the AAC out of necessity for my new suppressor and won't feel cheated one bit.
