So i went to the range today with my .308 (see sig) with a few friends. i ended up spending 5 hours getting free brass *roughly 32 lbs* and ended up shooting off maybe 30 rounds today. Long story short, I shot a total of 16 rounds of .308. my first 10 were some nato 147gr fmj stuff. all shot fine. i loaded up 10 PPU .308 soft nose bullets. 1st shot fired fine but seemed harsh (have an adj gas block and had it set to cycle 168gr amax ammo just enough). 2nd round fired fine but felt hot as well. 3rd round failed to chamber. i dropped the mag, round dropped out, as well as a blown primer. I checked the 2 other rounds, found the blown primer round and besides the blown primer, no other pressure signs. loaded the round into the mag and fired more. 4th round, fine. 5th round, fine, 6th round fine but 7th round failed to chamber. again, dropped the mag and round came out, with another blown primer. i picked up 4th, 5th and 6th spent casings, found the blown primer 1. 4th and 5th had only what i could only describe as a extra layered primer and 6th had the blown primer. I dont have a pic of the brass in question, ill see if i can get 1 up tomorrow, but it looks like if u took a normal, unfired primer, and put a thin layer of brass 1/2 the size on top of it, perfectly flat. anywho, after that I just stopped firing and went back to picking up brass.

edit:Only thing i found is if it was a cratered primer but without the crater (just the raised extra and perfectly flat)..not pic of my brass in question.

Might help if you list the load...

I have loaded the same lot of PPU (.308) about 3 times now and have yet to have the brass stretch much, not really enough to see more then one trim as its hardly grown past 2.018

My load, 44.0 grains of W748, Hornady 150 FMJBT from a few different .308 guns

Not a hot load by any means, chrono's 2630-2650 all day.

Re: problem with PPU .308 ammo????

PPU ammo accuracy is inconsistent at best, brass is decent to reload but that is about it. Looks like your rifle doesn't like the ammo so i would quit shooting it in. work up some good reloads and enjoy.
hope this helps.

Re: problem with PPU .308 ammo????

oh yeah, this ammo is already been pulled out so i dont shoot it, but i was curious if anyone had the pancake looking primer.

Re: problem with PPU .308 ammo????

PPU match ammo was very inconsistent(3" groups) in my ar10.I just shot it just to use The brass.after I rolled my own it was sub moa with 168 nosler cc using blc2..I was gonna sell the rifle cuz of that ammo..lucky I didn't.Btw I'm on my 4th load so far

Re: problem with PPU .308 ammo????

I asked a friend who was sorting out 30+ lbs of brass to send me a pic of the PPU primer.. he must have forgot. Ive shot some reg nata ammo out of it and 168gr amax and had no problems. the PPU i had left over from my HK91 clone figured id shoot it for the brass.

PPU Match Ammo.

I use the .223 69gr and 75gr Match as economical AR F-T/R training ammo for my Grandkiddos. Not capable of competitive accuracy, but they all go on paper.

I pulled a batch and found significant charge weight variation with a ball type powder. Tried metered charges of several weights and they all shot better, but I haven't found a true node yet.

The brass reloads nicely, and the bullets appear to be acceptable as components.
