Alpha mags,problem appears solved now

I just received two Alpha Type II mags, and the "expanding when loaded" problem appears to be solved. I did not notice any change in fit between loaded and empty mags.

They fit fairly well in my Seekins DBM, but not as loose as my AICS mag. One of my older Alpha mags drops out as intended, but the brand new mags are slightly tighter. Perhaps they will loosen up slightly with use.

Re: Alpha mags, problem appears solved now

I wonder if this will be the new norm or if it is the outlier? I'd be curious to hear from others, as I'm currently shopping around for AICS mags, and while I'd really like to use Alphas because of the extra length, I hate their shady business practices and design flaws.

Re: Alpha mags, problem appears solved now

I got 4 of the new ones and they run like a top. I adjusted the ramps for my setup and gtg. 591 surgeon btm metal

Re: Alpha mags, problem appears solved now

The business practice is not shady. Far from it in fact.

Chris is a very very busy guy and doesn't make mags full time. He uses what time he can find to make them rather then sitting on his ass.

It would be nice if he could push out tons of mags all the time but thats just not how things are. He does what he can when he can. He frequently hooks people up with extras when they have to wait.

I get what you are saying but just wanted to input that he and his business is far far from shady.

Re: Alpha mags, problem appears solved now

talked to Chris the 'owner' multiple times about problems with his mags, all I heard was ' Marty's bottom metal is to tight and I'll send you some replacement mags which never showed up,,, fuck that,,,

Re: Alpha mags, problem appears solved now

Chris has a full time regular job, and Alpha Mags are a sideline. I am sure he is super busy. I give him a lot of credit for developing this product when none of the full time manufactures did not.

I am quite satisfied, and completely understand his time constraints.

Re: Alpha mags, problem appears solved now

I have 10+ alpha mags for my 7wsm and all have worked without problems from the beginning and drop free.

Without turning this thread into a train wreck, google around for how he's treated customers in the past, on here and on other sites. In particular there was a groupbuy organized by folks in Australia who got jerked around pretty badly.

But like I said, if enough good reports come in about these new mags, I may pick some up instead of using AICS mags.

Sure sign of shady business practices. ( I couldn't find the sarcasm button )
The Alphas work flawlessly in my 7SAUM!!

Re: Alpha mags, problem appears solved now

I recently bought two of his .308 Type II for my 6.5 Creedmoor. I have an APA bottom. The mags fit tight and I'm happy. Only issue I have is sometimes the rounds seem to move forward in the mag and don't feed. I have to push the top round back and it's fine. I'm assuming I have this problem because it's a 6.5... Also, as an FYI for others, in the 10-round mags, only 9 6.5Cr fit.

Re: Alpha mags, problem appears solved now

I run 4 of the type 2's and they work great for my .243 and .308

I am now, I'll add my own short review when they get here.

Re: Alpha mags, problem appears solved now

Alpha mags are great, we run them in various bottom metals in test guns.

Re: Alpha mags, problem appears solved now

I have never had trouble with my Alpha Type 2 "expanding" when loaded with 10rds of 260 Rem loads. It fits just right into my CDI DBM and feeds without fail.

I've been a happy customer.

Re: Alpha mags, problem appears solved now

I had concerns when an order went 3 weeks without arrival, one phone call and Chris had a second shipped since the first was lost in the postal system.

I hope to get my hands on more as the budget allows.

Re: Alpha mags, problem appears solved now

About 1 year ago I purchased two 308 10 round mags and they sat on my shelf for 8 months. When I started using them I noticed if I loaded more than 7 rounds in them they wouldn't fit. I contacted Alpha and described the problem they said he would replace them. About 6 weeks later I called again, and again they said they would exchange them and to date I haven't seen a thing. I now have two looong 5 round mags that I'm using. I'm sure he is very busy but aren't most people these days

I don't think Chris is trying to screw anybody, just WAY overloaded and that is something he will have to solve one way or another.

Re: Alpha mags, problem appears solved now

I have 2 type 3's and 3 type 4's, all of which were ordered at the same time, all of which were billed as handling the 284 Win.

The type 3's were in stock at the time of order and the type 4s were "2 weeks out". I received the type 3s promptly. After a month or so, I called to inquire about the type 4s. They were "two weeks out" because they had been poorly coated at the coat shop. No problem. A month or two later I called to inquire again, and they were "two weeks out" because the coating shop had done a poor job of coating them. I received an apology for them being so late, and was told I'd receive an extra free of charge for the trouble. A few weeks later, I received 3 magazines I ordered, and only the 3 magazines I ordered, no extra.

I didn't call and bitch to try and finagle the "free" magazine - I didn't vote for the "free stuff" politicians on November 6th, and I'm not about trying to get free stuff, so I could care less about that part.

However, I was bothered that I kept getting the all-too-common "two weeks out" line that we have become so accustomed to in the firearms industry.

I get it - a lot of businesses are small outfits being run in entrepreneur's free time. I think we all get it. Lead times are not always as fast as we would like, because there is high demand and relatively little supply.

I think the concept of under promise and over deliver is applicable here. If you really, really think you can deliver the product in 10 weeks, quote 14. That way, if you can actually deliver in 10 weeks, the customer will be extremely pleased. If you take the 14, they're not upset, because they are getting exactly what they were told they would. Moreover, pro-active contact in the form of a phone call or email alerting the customer that circumstances have changed, and there will be a delay goes a LONG way towards placating them. People are generally reasonable, especially in our game.

I used to build race engines and general racecar fabrication. I was very often beholden to suppliers and subcontractors. After way too many missed deadlines, I learned that for my line of work, to estimate an accurate timeline, I had to do my damndest to come up with what I thought was totally doable, and then multiply it by 3.

The real complication was that if I calculated a [real] 24 week timeline, the customer would scoff, and take their business to the schmuck that would lie to them and quote 8 weeks! I initially lost a lot of customers that way, but after a while, my popularity took off because people knew they'd get a REAL timeline from me they could count on.

Anyway, my type 3s and 4s work pretty well. They fit my CDI bottom metal better than AICS mags, and don't balloon and get too tight. However, they aren't optimal for the 284, which is understandable because it's a 'tweener cartridge. Fatter than a standard .473" cartridge, but skinnier than a magnum. What's more, the ramp on the follower is positioned perfect for 300WSM and 7WSM cartridges, making it too short for the 284. It creates a fulcrum about which the cartridges can rock. If they choose to rock back (only happens occasionally), the bolt can ride over the rim and cause a jam. Luckily, the jam only happens on the last round in the magazine, and can be fixed by simply pulling the bolt back 1/2-3/4" and pushing forward again. Just my experience. Mind you, these magazines are "for" the WSM cartridges and not the 284. Still, I think if the follower ramp were .200" further forward, they'd work great for both the WSM and the 284.

That's my take on Alpha. Carry on.
