I am looking at getting a 308 AR for Hog Control I have a 300BLK and a 223 already so please don't tell me to look there. What I am wanting is a good AR platform in 308 that has good accuracy, will function suppressed well, and a good manufacture. price is under 3K. I like the GAP-10 but not sure how long the wait time is
THanks
Chris

Re: Which 308 AR

Ya I will do that but is there any that are comp to them that are off the shelf?

Re: Which 308 AR

Under 3k? Only choice is LMT at that price point, as far as I'm concerned.

Odds are, with options, the GAP would cost more.

I'd just use my .300 BLK and 5.56 to kill hogs and keep saving and get (and wait for) what you really want.

Re: Which 308 AR

The Options are Moot I can do the Upgrades myself and buy the parts from Brownells for a discount. The 300BLk is not good at the ranges I have the pigs anymore. I have shot enought of them they are spooked at out to the 300+ range

Re: Which 308 AR

I wouldn't recommend threading the barrel myself with a Brownells kit, or adding a switch block myself. I'd let GAP do it the way they want. Also you'll find if you choose to Cerakote it yourself, it probably win come out nearly as nice as it would from GAP.

Re: Which 308 AR

If you can afford the 3K LMT go for it. Another option is if its primary function is as pest control and not punching paper so to speak you could for 3K purchase a DPMS,Rock River, or Armalite and deck it out how you want. I personally like the DPMS / SR25 patterns that allow you to use the 20 nd P-Mags as opposed to the Rock River and Armalite that use the FAL mags. ALL of them are good.

Re: Which 308 AR

Which MAgs do the GAP use, I never put much thought into that aspect.

Re: Which 308 AR

GAP uses SR-25 magazines. GAP will also tune their gas system for your suppressor.

It seems to me GAP, LaRue, and POF have the best systems if you intend to suppress.

Re: Which 308 AR

If you are shooting Hogs at 300-600 yards, then the accuracy difference between a GAP, Armalite, DPMS, etc is not going to be realized.

I would suggest that making sure whatever you get uses Stoner/SR25/DPMS pattern magazines. That appears to be what the industry is standardizing on for the large frame AR.

If you are comfortable doing your own work, why not just buy a Mega Arms MATEN receiver set and building up from there? You can select the components to fit your price point and accuracy requirements.

Armalite does not use FAL magazines. Their older models (AR-10B) use M14 type magazines built specifically for the AR10. The new rifles (AR-10A, yes I know that is confusing) accept LR20 Pmags.

Re: Which 308 AR

I had not thought about rolling my own, I don't guess there is any difference between building an AR15 and an AR 10 may have to do that option
Thank
Chris

Re: Which 308 AR

The only difference is that some of the parts are cross-compatible with the AR15 and some aren't.

With a receiver set like the MATEN you can use either the Armalite or DPMS pattern bolt carrier group. You can then send your bolt off to Krieger or the like and have them spin you a barrel. The MATEN we are building is getting a Rainier Arms Select 16" barrel just to see what kind of accuracy they are capable of at that price point.

Re: Which 308 AR

Piston= Loud Suppressed.
I called GAP and they say about 6 months I may just go that route

Re: Which 308 AR

Just out of curiosity (because I've already chosen to build off a MATEN upper/lower), would a Fulton Armory .308 be a reasonable choice for this scenario? In other words, are they as in between on quality as they are in between price of a mass-market (DPMS, etc.) rifle and something like an LMT?

LoneWolf, I'll be interested to read your take on the Rainier Arms Select barrel with the MATEN.

Obviously I was not aware of that thanks for updating me :)LW.

Re: Which 308 AR

Just noted a 16" LMT MWS for sale in the rifle section. Upgraded trigger on this one.

Not mine but something to consider if you have any interest.

My MWS arrives next month.

Re: Which 308 AR

POF*USA .308 if you don't wanna wait for the GAP-10. Sub-moa accuracy, reliability, easy to clean, and the best piston design available.

I've got several Armalites (AR10's). I've had them for 10+ yrs and I have no idea what a LR20 pmag is. I've bought I don't know how many m14 mags (5$) and moded them in 5 mins that work great. Armalite has sales on their fact. Mags for $30 each that will work flawlessly. An AR10T or any match barreled AR10 (Armalite) will be reliably moa or better with good ammo for half the price of any custom. I never understand why people think they need benchrst accuracy to kill an animal with basketball size kill zones.

Okie

Re: Which 308 AR

In agree with LoneWolf and okiefired. I don't have experience with other brands of AR-10's, but my Armalite 10A4FB is well under MOA with my hand loads and match ammo. It all came together once I realized it had untapped potential. I simply swapped out the OEM handguards for the free floated type. The groups shrunk and shot-to-shot consistency improved. Another $2000.00 wouldn't buy me much in the accuracy department.

Heard good things about the POF from everyone that I know who has one, although I've always been averse to piston AR's myself. My friend shoots his with me a lot and his POF goes toe to toe with my OBR and GAP-10, which are both great choices but the GAP was over 3K for me, and I bought the OBR before the price increase that's now over 3K as well. I've seen the POF @ 3K in several places. LMT is also a great option.

Re: Which 308 AR

Sig 716 is definately a worthy contender for the price. Check them out... I love mine.

Re: Which 308 AR

Sig 716. I've been shooting mine for about six months now, and while it's not sub moa, 1.25 @ 100 isn't bad for 1600 bucks. Should lay down the hogs pretty quick. On the other hand if you just want a GAP real bad and have the cash, then enjoy.

Re: Which 308 AR

P.S. I was shooting magtech 150 gr ammo. Cheap stuff to be sure. I will post again with some pics as soon as i get some handloads worked up. I think the accuracy should get a lot better. We'll see.

Re: Which 308 AR

FWIW:

GAP and POF are never a mistake, and worth every penny for a precision/match shooter.

For hogs . . . . . . . your life or sporting reputation are not on the line.

A DPMS AP4 (or the Remington version) would get it done for half the cost. I ran a fixed Leuplod scope on one for years.

Every DPMS I have seen shot bug holes. I have taken mine through 2 classes at ThunderRanch (OREGON). No issues.

Of course, if you just WANT a GAP, let me encourage you also.

BMT

Re: Which 308 AR

For $3000 i would go LMT or Colt. But with the elections and all you might want to look at the DPMS. And spend the money upgradeing it. Mine started of as a Sportical. I added a Rainer Arms S/S barrel And Geissele SD-E trigger. Stock rifle was $750 used like new. Uses std. Magpull .308 mags. Shoots like a dream!

Re: Which 308 AR

DPMS SASS at $2k is a no-brainer. No need to do anything with it but load and shoot. I'm no great shakes behind a trigger, and mine shoots sub .5 MOA with GMM 168s, at least when I take my time. When I fire as fast as I can reacquire my target (like I said, no great shakes), it looks like my avatar. I seriously doubt that 10% of the shooters on the 'Hide outshoot the SASS on a regular basis. Furthermore, a super-expensive uber weapon will NOT make you a better shooter, so why not save the money and either buy better glass or LOTS more ammunition? Just my $0.02, but...

Re: Which 308 AR

i agree MontanaHick, my dpms-sass with 24 inch bull barrel is like a videogame rifle....
just pull the trigger, and wait for the gong :)

Re: Which 308 AR

Build your own off a DPMS or MaTen platform. Install a good barrel, trigger, bolt.

With all the upgrades SDE trigger, UBR stock, Troy rail, DA7 adjustable gas block, MOE grip and mag I have less than $1600 in mine It has the chrome lined 16" midlength factory barrel (Bushmaster/DPMS). It also will shoot sub moa. Loaded with a full mag (less suppressor) it weighs 12.3lbs

Re: Which 308 AR

Colt or LaRue or LMT in that price range.

I agree with everything said here with exception of making your own mag because I never tried. Armalite doesn't get much love here but that's okay, to each his own. Plus I will be adding another to my stable after Christmas and if these guys aren't buying them it leaves me with a good chance of me not having to wait for one!

Re: Which 308 AR

SIG 716
I'm getting sub-moa with handloads from mine. Fired several 5 shot groups under 4" @ 450 yds yesterday, best was 3 3/8"

Re: Which 308 AR

I bought the LMT MWS when they first came out, and it's still the best rifle I've owned to date. With FGMM it shoots around 3/4 moa, it loves Hornady TAP, and hits 1/2 moa and under consistently!

I agree!! I own a LMT MWS an Armalite AR 10A4 and the DPMS SASS which is my favorite. It's the most accurate of the 3 with the LMT MWS a close 2nd but costs $1000 more.

I'm not trying to thread crap but, it's kind of pointless to make a new one.

I'm looking for a .308 and so far, I've looked at Fulton Armory + Rock River...But, DPMS seems to have a bad reputation.

Is there any reason for that reputation as of late?

And if not, would you take a DPMS over a FA or RR?

Thanks and apologies for thread crapping.

Re: Which 308 AR

I have been to the LARUE shops when I worked at STI, he had some really nice stuff, but I am not really into his rifles for the price I can get a custom GAP and some Add-on for the factory and a box of ammo, to his bone stock OBR.

Re: Which 308 AR

Personally, i would go Larue OBR. I have 2 DPMS rifles, one is a LR308 with the 24" ss bull and the other is the 308 sportical. The LR308 routinely shoots around 0.7 moa. The sportical, i have not shot enough to give a fair accuracy assessment yet. If i were just looking for something to kill hogs a long way off, the LR308 would fit the bill quite nicely, but its heavy. If i was looking at a way to burn $3000 on a rifle that i would shoot the shit out of at long ranges, cherish, and pass down one day, I would get the OBR.
