Hey guys, I'm looking for the best scope option for me to start learning the basics of long range shooting and ranging. I've had a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 on order for 3 wks at Optics Planet and just found out that it won't be until after Christmas before my order is fulfilled.
I'm looking for my next best option here as far as scopes go. I do want open adjustable turrets, 30 mm tube, and to stay below $800. I'm open to any suggestions! Thanks!

Re: Long Range Scope for Beginner???

Same thing through either eurooptic.com, SWFA or Liberty Optics. Really any vendor on this site will take care of you.

Re: Long Range Scope for Beginner???

Yeah I am checking with Euro Optic now, thanks! That really didn't answer my question though...?

Re: Long Range Scope for Beginner???

I just went through this a couple of months back. You made the right choice in the Vortex Viper PST.

If you had to look for something else check out the Super Sniper line from SWFA. Can't go wrong there either.

Re: Long Range Scope for Beginner???

The Vortex PST "IS" the right choice for what you are after. Check with Mike @ CSTactical, he will hook you up!! Vortex is the only scope in that price range that I would use.

Can you explain the differences between MRADs and MOA... I'm sure this is a huge discussion, but if you could just hit the high notes I'd appreciate it. I've found the Vortex Viper PST MRAD in stock.

Re: Long Range Scope for Beginner???

Google for milradians and minute of angle. I prefer milradians because the adjustments will be in 1/10 increments rather than 1/4, 1/2 etc. It is easier for me to think that way.

Re: Long Range Scope for Beginner???

MRAD is the one I use, but it's a personal preference. Pull the trigger (pun) and get out shooting. That's how you'll learn and most likely become irrevocably addicted !!! Good Luck.

Both are used the same way, so pick one (as long as the turrets and reticle match) and stick with it. They are angular measurements, so try not to stick linear values to them (don't think metric vs. imperial). Every time a poll is conducted between the two of them here, most people pick MILs.

Re: Long Range Scope for Beginner???

I am also in the same situation and have been debating a over a 6-24 PST in sfp or ffp vs the new HS XLR. Will mostly be doing target shoot on an NRA 600 yard range so my thought is start with the sfp PST and reevaluate if I get into UKD shooting.

Since the topic of mil vs moa came up. Am I doing my math right that MOA has a smaller adjustment per click, .256 in @ 100 yards vs mils .36 in @ 100 yards?

Re: Long Range Scope for Beginner???

I love my Vortex PST 6-24x50 FFP MOA. I was able to hit 5" steel circle at 700 yards (farthest I've shot so far). It is clear, tracks perfect out and back to zero.

Re: Long Range Scope for Beginner???

.25 MOA is slightly smaller than .1 mRad, but you'll neve be able to shoot the difference in the field. Don't let that discourage you from using mRad. It really is becoming the standard system.

They're both angular measurements (picture a slice of pie out of a circle). MOA is a smaller angle than MRAD by a factor of approximately 3.44 (ie. a slice of pie slightly less than 1/3 as wide at the crust).

The important thing to know is that an angle is an angle; it doesn't change. What changes is the the arc length subtended by a given angle (the length of the crust on a slice of pie) as the radius of the circle (ie. distance to target) increases or decreases.

As an example, one MOA subtends an arc length of ~1.0472" at 100 yd, whereas one MOA subtends an arc length of 3.6" at 100 yd. At 1000 yd, the arc lengths are 10X greater because the radius of the circle ("pie") increased 10-fold. The angle did not change. So group sizes, scope adjustments, etc., are all really based on the angle in terms of either MOA or MRAD, and the arc length they subtend at some specified distance.

Hope this helps.

Re: Long Range Scope for Beginner???

How critical is it to apply a specified torque setting to the base screws as well as the rings?? I only ask because I can't find a torque wrench around here that measures in low enough inch/pounds. Also I have a TPS 20MOA base and it did not come with any recommended torque setting??

Re: Long Range Scope for Beginner???

Most rings are 15 inch lbs. - not foot lbs. for the little screws

Warne makes an Warne Torque Wrench TW1 , 25" lbs wrench: very handy for their rings

Weaver Gunsmithing Torque Wrench 849728

Optics Planets has both

I agree with this statement 100%. Yes, the MOA would work, but it is quicker thinking for me in MRAD. Personal preference yes, but it just plain works.
