hows it going?

i am looking into buying a new gas gun, big thing is i am left handed and have been looking into a few of the left handed models out there but cant really decide. the rifle will be used for starting in 3 gun comps. and just target shooting as of now.

any advice, info, or guidance is greatly appreciated.

Re: best southpaw AR?

I have owned several Stag Arms guns and I've been well pleased with them ...I hear ERA is selling a lefty model now too but I don't know much about it...Stag has been making the best for the longest though.

Re: best southpaw AR?

Stag, they were the first and the best. RRA I believe is making lefty AR's, but the Stags are a better deal imo and are very accurate. I have a lefty Stag model 7H on order, can't wait until it gets here.

Re: best southpaw AR?

the stag is the rifle i was looking at the most. thanks for the input fellas.

Re: best southpaw AR?

By southpaw AR, do you mean you're looking for one with a left ejection port or one with lefty friendly controls? Since I'm a weirdo (right handed but left eye dominant), I shoot AR's left handed but I've never had a problem with using standard, right side ejecting semi-autos. I install a ambi mag release, selector, and charging handle and I'm good to go.

For left ejection AR I would say Stag, like everyone else but for a full ambi lower, it doesn't get any better than the KAC SR-15 in my opinion. I personally think that ambi controls are more important for a lefty shooter than which side the brass is ejecting.

Re: best southpaw AR?

I'm left handed and left eye dominant when it comes to rifles and I've done an awful lot of looking around for good lefty setups, so here goes.

If you want an upper receiver with a left side ejection one thing to consider is parts availability. There are not many companies who make the reversed bolt carrier groups for the left side ejection uppers. Stag is the one veteran in this area that I'm aware of. I did also hear that RRA is getting into lefty receivers.

I would recommend that you either buy a KAC complete lower and the upper of your choice, or order a stripped lower with an ambi bolt release machined in, buy one of at least two drop in left side mag release buttons, and build from there. That way you have a standard AR platform with a few mods done to suit your particular needs. No matter how you go about it you're going to have at least a bit of dependance on proprietary or hard to find parts. KAC, LWRC (so I hear), and ATXS Weapons all offer fully ambi lowers with all controls machined into them. Companies like Seekins Precision, Mega Arms, and a few others offer lowers with right side bolt releases machined into them, and you can buy this or this to replace the magazine catch on the left side of the rifle. Install a BAD ASS and your choice of ambi charging handle and you have a rifle you can run any way you wish.

Also, there really isn't an advantage to having the left side ejection port. I've never once had an issue with the regular ejection ports. Perhaps you have and can see the need for a left side port.

There's a summary of what I've found. Just some food for thought.

Re: best southpaw AR?

thanks for all the info guys, i am also considering a right port and ambi controls. i dont have a ton of experience with gas guns yet so i was basically going on, im a southpaw so i should buy a left handed AR. so according to most of you, if i buy a right handed rifle, the door opens up considerably with make, model, etc. i will look into all of this before deciding

thanks again.

Re: best southpaw AR?

I'm right handed, major left eye dominance so I end up shooting lefty alot.

NO limit on budget- look for the newer AXTS full ambi lower, couple that with a Bad-ass safety and a Raptor or similiar charging handle and you've solved most of your problems.

I went Seekins, Bad-ASS and Norgon ambi with a Raptor CH

Re: best southpaw AR?

I guess I don't get it, why should a southpaw shoot a right hand rifle when they don't have to? I do understand that we can and ambi controls are available. I can shoot a right hand bolt gun too, but I don't have to.

If there are so many benefits of leftys shooting a right port rifle why the heck is the port on the right side of right hand uppers, it should be on the left side so you can have all the same benefits leftys get shooting right handed.

I also understand that the top tier SHTF/combat ready rifles are not made in lefty and in that case I would deal with the gas in my face to get the reliability...but when I'm hunting or punching paper or just putting shots down range I think a lefty rifle for a lefty shooter is what I want.

So really nothing to add for OP???

Re: best southpaw AR?

i took a look today at a DPMS 3G1 rifle and i must say i really liked it alot, along with its affordability for a new guy wanting to get into 3 gun. i believe it would be 1200$ well spent. any nay sayers?

Re: best southpaw AR?

I am also right handed-left eye dominant.

I shoot Right handed ARs with ambi controls. No issues, and I can operate my gun eithe right or let handed.

Its easier with an AR.

I have a lefty bolt gun, though. right handed bolt actions are harder to use effectively. Not impossible, just harder. I have a Lefty bolts in Ruger 375, Savage 308, Tikka 223, and CZ 22 lr.

But for an AR--A right handed gun with ambi controls is a better option.

Re: best southpaw AR?

I am also a left-eye dominant righty that shoots lefty. I have only owned bolt guns and shot guns thus far and have always bought righty guns, thus it's natural for me to shoot them and I find it easy. It's all I have known since I was 15. Back then I held my first 22 rifle at a Boy Scout camp. I started shooting it righty and was not very good. A instructor asked me a couple questions and then asked me to hold lefty. Walked away from camp with some good targets and never looked back! He must have been a good instructor.

First AR is on order and its a righy.

That makes two of us!

Really I'm new to this but If you can find what you want in a LH rifle get it.

Re: best southpaw AR?

I have two AXTS AX556 lowers and absolutely love them. They are the only TRUE ambi lower on the market. You can do everything from the left side that you can do from the right, plus the ADAC feature is awesome. Check out this video:

Pair one of these with a Raptor charging handle and I promise you will love it.

Re: best southpaw AR?

I am right handed, but have a lefty friend I have shot with occasionally. He shoots righty uppers with ambi lowers without any issue at all. That said, he bought a Stag lefty AR, and absolutely loves it. He said it's the first AR he felt was built for him. I say give one a try, the argument about parts availability is weak at best. Have a spare BCG like most have for any other gun and you are good to go. Hell I have a righty LMT MWS and I can't get a single fukking spare part (BCGs are made of Kryptonite) for that gun anyways. You would probly have an easier time getting spare lefty parts from Stag than any other parts lately JMHO.

Re: best southpaw AR?

Instead of telling the OP to shoot right handed guns just answer the damm question.

Noveske 5.56 and 6.8, http://lefthandrifles.com/

RRA 5.56 http://www.rockriverarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=547

Stag Arms 5.56 and 6.8 to include a piston version
http://www.stagarms.com/index.php?cPath=13_21

I think there is more than enough info on these Mfg to answer the quality issue.

There are no .308 lefty AR form factor rifles that I can find.
Noveske (customer service) stated they were thinking of doing another one but who knows.

Beat me to it!

Re: best southpaw AR?

I too am a LH shooter. Regarding right port ejection, I learned long ago in my trap shooting days that as sweet as my prized Win SX-1 trap was, for me it was unacceptable. Between flying shells and hot gases it made eye protection a must and learning to deal with steamed up lens... oh yea and then you were always having to push glasses up into position so you were looking over the lens. It is nice to cheat, pitch the glasses and shoot a left hand eject semi-auto. This is why lefties always scan the gun shelfs for rifles with stuff on the wrong side first thing when walk up to gun counter. Thanks for posting those links.

Re: best southpaw AR?

Stag 3GL, a lefty from the original left hand gun maker, specifically configured for 3-Gun comp. Here's the info. Dueck Defense RTS Sights allow instant transition from optic to irons, and back, and can be mounted in either R/H or L/H applications.

This is my rifle. I'm a righty and it's intended an F T/R rifle for my grandkids to use. It wears alternately a Weaver T-24 or a Tasco 6-24x42M MilDot Varmint/Target, depending on distance and primary task.

Re: best southpaw AR?

I've had a Stag lefty for several years and love it. Just recently put a Badger Ordnance LH charging handle on it, and that little piece of kit is tits!
