Planning a .308 build and going with a Bartlein Palma contour cut to 24".
Plan to run a stainless can on it so my question is....

Should I go with the heavy contour to try to negate the effects of the weight of the can on the muzzle or save total weight by going with the medium contour?

Or will the difference have zero effect??

Am I over thinking this???

Your thoughts???

Re: Heavy or Med. Palma???

I like the light palma myself and I've seen some that shot great with a can.

+1 for light palma. I think you'll like the how great it shoots and how much weight you save. You're going in the right direction, just keep on going!

Re: Heavy or Med. Palma???

I'd go with the heavy one and only 20 inches, the can adds too much length with a 24.

Re: Heavy or Med. Palma???

Have a Bartlein Med. Palma on mine (26"). With the recoil reduction with the suppressor on I wish I had gone with the Light Palma. HTH

Re: Heavy or Med. Palma???

A H palma is going to roughly be 5.2 lbs at 24" and .876 muzzle dia. M palma 4.28 lbs and .796 muzzle dia. A short heavy barrel will probably have less harmonics than a thinner barrel of same length. Id say go H palma and get it fluted if you want to drop up to 10oz at the most i would say.

Yes, and yes.

Thought about fluting as well. But there is the argument that fluting a barrel messes with accuracy..... Or doesn't...
Makes my head hurt..

Re: Heavy or Med. Palma???

Done correctly, fluting is fine. I'd go with a Medium palma. Medium Palma is a great all around contour.

Re: Heavy or Med. Palma???

+1 for Sonic Crack. With Fluted H Palma you'll gain also less whip effect(the extra weight of the can) and more heat dissipation.

Re: Heavy or Med. Palma???

Fluting is over rated! Unless you flute a Heavy barrel such as a M24 or MTU/AMU barrel, you will see little benefit as far as weight savings. To save weight, you are better off going with a lighter profile such as a medium/light varmint or Palma.

It's a great theory but its proven many times over that flutes are mostly asthetic.

If you go Heavy Palma at 26" its gonna be a 14-17lb rifle depeding on other options such as scope and stock.

I'm telling you from expereince, the next comp gun I have built will be a Medium Palma. Some of the best and most accurate rifles have competed in the same comps I have and do just as well or better then I with the medium palma barrel. Its definately thick ENOUGH to compete and sustain long strings of fire without effectiing POI or hunt with without breaking your back.

**Just so you know I run a 21" M24 barreled gun and McMillan stock with integral adjustable cheek peice. It weighs right at 15lbs with a Nightforce and loaded mag.

Re: Heavy or Med. Palma???

If you cant decide just go with the Whitley Palma, it is about halfway between the two, contour #18 I think. Should be about .83 at the muzzle. There, problem solved.

Re: Heavy or Med. Palma???

I went with a Kreiger heavy palma. If I could do it again I would have went lighter.

Re: Heavy or Med. Palma???

All three of my rifles I am running right now have heavy palma barrels. After running mtu's they are significantly lighter and about the same diameter at the muzzle.

Also I wouldn't go with sonic crack's muzzle diameter numbers. His weights look to be about right, but neither one of those barrels have that small of a diameter at 30".

Re: Heavy or Med. Palma???

If you're running a can then I would go heavy barrel and short but just at 20". I know 18" barrels can reach the distance but I like having a 20" barrel in terms of velocity.

Re: Heavy or Med. Palma???

A 20oz pop bottle fits really nice over a medium palma barrel at ~24-26".

Does a nice job of preventing your brush from flicking solvent all over the place when it comes out the muzzle. Also does a nice job of catching patches. If you push it on further, the bottom of the bottle acts as a "stop" so you can reverse your jag if you're doing some JB polishing or similar.

Just a couple more reasons why Palmas are best...

Your right OK, brain fart on my part. I subtracted instead of adding to muzzle dia.
