Anyone shoot these and can tell me what kind of barrel twist they like? and what kind of damage do they do? could you use this for hunting?

I am new to trying to learn what different bullets do.. I know some bullets like the triple shock don't look like much then when they hit something look out. So I am slowly learning that not all hpbt are made the same.

Thanks for any info..

Comparing Barnes solid copper bullets to jacketed bullets is like apples and oranges.

Where as Barnes are solid copper bullets a traditional bullet is made of a copper jacket and lead/lead alloy core.

Jacket design defines a lot about how a hunting bullet will perform, ie. expansion, weight retention, penetration. When developing a hunting bullet for large game you are looking for a bullet that will enter then expand after entrance and retain a large chunk to penetrate through bone and hard tissue. Varmint bullets are similar to competition bullets as they have a thinner jacket but are meant to expand and fragment as soon as hitting a target.

Custom Comp bullets are pretty much copies of SMK's and they have thinner copper jackets with little taper, compared to a "hunting" bullet that has a heavy taper in the jacket.

Will they kill, Yes! I have blown the insides out of deer with 30-175 SMK's

Are they good for large game animals, NO! These bullets will not hold together like a traditional hunting bullet.Shooting a large game animal with them with a thick hide, heavy bones, and large body cavity could result in several wounded animals or multiple follow-up shots to kill.

As for twist anything 1x12" or faster will shoot them well. PS their are plenty of good hunting bullets out their that will do much better than the Custom Comps, but if you want to try them give them a whirl.

Re: Nosler Custom Comp .308 190gr

I am not making a hunting round persay, but we have a wild dog problem in our area. And I have beef cattle and I have an open pasture I graze them in. So since I am looking for something economical to train with. I just wanted to know if I happened to have just this in my mag would I be able to stop a dog...

I just didn't want to buy 1000 of them and not be able to get some dual purpose.

Now would it be better to go with a 190gr or something like the 168/175gr area?

Re: Nosler Custom Comp .308 190gr

It will drop a dog especially with a decently placed shot. Big difference between a dog and large game. It's also not the weight of the bullet as much as the design of the bullet and it's intended use. Btw how far are you from Memphis?

Re: Nosler Custom Comp .308 190gr

I've killed tons of coyotes with a 10/22 and cci minimags so yes a 190gr 30cal bullet will kill them.

What are you shooting them out of? Bolt rifle, semi? I have a bunch of them and am considering selling them as I just don't shoot long range with 30cal rifles anymore.

Re: Nosler Custom Comp .308 190gr

Wild dogs will be no problem for that combination. The value that the 168/175 will get you is just velocity, but your rifle probably has a 1x10 twist so you should be good to shoot all of them.
