As some of you know, I have my father's .264wm that he inherited from my grandpa. It's a pre 64 model 70. Dad has been wanting this rifle ever since my late grandfather promised it to him long before I was in the picture. Unfortunately, the rifle has seen plenty of action since then. The finish on the stock is ruined, the bore is pretty much shot, and dad is a bit disgusted with it. So, Im thinking of rebuilding it, keeping the .264 chamber (because we have hundreds of loaded rounds, brass, and components) and Dad has always wanted one. My question is; what barrel should I go with? I dont want or need something really expensive, the budget is probably gonna dictate but I'd like to hear your ideas. Im thinking of a slightly heavier contour, like a light varmint or something, finished around 24" with enough twist to spin a 140vld.

The rifle will be strictly a hunting rifle, and the way Dad shoots, it would take another lifetime to make 800rnds, so Im not too worried about burning it up.

for a new bbl check out bugholes i see they have a brux 8.5 twist #3 and #4 in stock seems that might fit the bill would just need the chamber cut and twisted on.

shilen i have heard a good bbl. some one with more 6.5 knowledge would have to say if the 1-9 is good for the 140's. i would think it would work but that is just an assumption.

For what your Dad needs, sure, it's plenty good.

Walther used to sell Win mod 70 replacement barrels with the dog dick, never hear bad things on their barrels, Kidd uses them for his .22 barrels and they are killer .

I've run shilen select match, but not the standards. The five I've owned over the years shot lights out.

Most of the ones you see are 26" for that chambering. 24" would be ok, but give up quite a bit of speed in that chambering. Additionally, I would want a 1:8" or 1:8.5". The only 1:9" 6.5mm I've had was a .260 and it didn't like 140s. Perhaps the higher velocity of the .264 Win would work.

Douglas will reproduce it, they are the ones I have chose to replace my 264 win barrel on a Browning Safari Grade Mauser action.

Well Im not too worried about reproducing the contour, I just want a good tube that wont cost a bunch without sacrificing accuracy. I guess now I just need to know 24" or 26", and either 9 twist or 8.5.
