Around here the deer are so fat and happy that we can't even get them to come to corn feeders. I guess that is the downside to hunting the post oak savanna in a (relatively) wet year. This is the only deer that I have "seen" during shooting light that is likely legal (13" inside spread rule). It is just a glimpse on the left edge of the screen.

    Glimpse of buck

There is a pretty nice 4x5 too but he hasn't been around except very late at night.

My camera went tits up about two months ago so I really don't know what is hitting my stand site now. I mainly bought he camera so that I can see what makes it through the season. However, there has been very little action while I have been there...

All of that said, these two made the mistake of coming around while I was on stand. There was a group of around 20 or so and the big one stopped broadside. The little one did too, but on the off side. The 140 gr barnes bullet (270 win) hit both in the vitals and neither ran further than about 40 yards. The big one is a sow and both are in the freezer. I'm still negotiating with the wife about a pig head in the house. Otherwise the big pig will be featured in the garage. The photo perspective really does not do justice to how big that pig was...

I am 0 for 5 with a bow and 0 for 6 with a rifle!!! My brother shot the number 1 target for this year. I have been watching him for awhile. It's bitter sweet because it is his first deer.

Just shot a nice 4x4 in Southern Oklahoma at my friends ranch on Tuesday. Our party also took several really prime coyotes and had some fun at the range with Tannerite.

Left there today and just arrived in Iowa where I have a buck tag for their first gun season that starts tomorrow.

After 25 years of deer hunting the OK deer is the first one I've taken with antlers. Just never saw a buck i was willing to take hunting in MN. Many does for good meat, but no bucks before this year at home.

Now IF I could just locate one of those BIG bucks Iowa is so famous for tomorrow.....

Holmes that is a great looking buck. Nice shooting!
I've been holding out for a nice heavy horned one here in east Texas but no cigar yet. The rut is funky this year....definitely not cut & dried.

I took a leave of absence this year, I'm living through you guys.

Re: How is deer season treating you???

It's too damn hot here this year. Dec 1 and it was 70 degrees out today. 30mph gusting winds out of the south(my best stands are setup for North winds). Have tomorrow left to fill my tags.

Filled my Doe tag but not my Buck tag this year in CA. Did not have a chance to do our SoDak trip this year due to the wife losing her job.
Still have my CA Bear Tag for a few more weeks. Went out today and sure as heck, I SEE A BUCK. Some old bear tracks and a Bobcat too

I got him on the 17th... Seen a lot of does, and a ton of smaller bucks this year. Not the biggest one I've seen, but I'm happy!!!

Got this one opening weekend. He was chasing a doe pretty hard. I took him at 622yds with a 7wsm and a 168VLD.

*That is a stick I used to prop his head up, it's not a giant drop tine.

Got this guy Nov 17th with my Savage ML-II at about 75 yards. No luck so far with the bow this year.

Deer season treated me great this year. Good times in the field with various family members during scouting, and a fine opening morning 4x5 buck at 488 yds.

Had a pretty good year back in SD on the family property. First whitetail buck 4x3.5 (he'd been fighting) for me @429 w/ a 5 degree incline. Savage 110 .308 168gr. Hornady BTHP, YHM suppressor, NF NXS 8-32. Sorry for the crappy iPhone pics.

I wish I had something to contribute, but wasn't a good season for me. Nice bucks guys, congrats!

Re: How is deer season treating you???

I have no pics at the moment but got a 3 pointer the last afternoon of rifle season. Nice pics everyone and happy to hear that for the most part it was a good season.

Re: How is deer season treating you???

I shot a spike I wanted on day 1 of gun season. A good season so far. I will be hitting it hard over Christmass.

Re: How is deer season treating you???

Deer finally started moving around our place after the most recent cold front pushed through. These two were unluckily enough to move through while I and my son were in the area. Neither will win any awards for giant size, but they will fill the freezer. And my son seems pretty proud of dad, even though the deer aren't "book worthy."

This spike is most likely a 1.5 year old deer, judging by body size and condition so I am really glad to get him out of the gene pool before he did too much breeding. All told, we were able to tag 5 spikes on our property. The real up shot is that while most bucks did not meet the 13" inside minimum spread antler restriction we have in our county, the spikes seen/shot made up only a very small portion of total buck sightings. This one may win our "big spike contest" so it is a double bonus...

Re: How is deer season treating you???

One of the worst deer seasons I have every had here in SW KS. There has been some nice deer taken, but it has been much less than years prior.
The drought has been blamed for this. Regardless of the actual reason, it hit pretty hard here.

The plus side is I have noticed the last week or two has brought out some big ones (as it usually happens this time of year here). Leaves some hope for next season.

It wasn't just rack size, the does were a bit smaller from what I witnessed and others reported, I found 4 or 5 young dead deer on the main property I hunt this summer while working a food plots. ( 280 acres of river bottom)

Re: How is deer season treating you???

Gunner, we had the same effect in NW MO. The drought has minimized the big ones, with the few that are still around had thin tines and looked beat. Hopefully next year is better.

Re: How is deer season treating you???

GRRR... Treating me terribly this am. 2 of us bowhunting a little stretch of woods by a creek. 4 stands available, we chose the ridgetop and mid ridge because they usually fare the best on clear, windy days. Naturally 6 deer crossed right by the creek stand we had left empty - in plain view; but out of bow range. Finally one comes by later in range for my buddy, but the deer had a busted/bloody leg. Likely hit by a car, so he passed...
