Does anyone have any special tricks to get deer to leave
the area of their stand at dark, so that they don't stay away later?
I hate giving away my stand locations and in turn turn the deer nocturnal. These deer are already educated about treestands. The best we can do so far has been to get someone to ride an ATV nearby. There are times though we've all had deer on us. Any creative idea is much appreciated.

Barking like a dog doesn't work.
Flashlight gives away stand locations.
Shooting a doe defeats the purpose.
Anyone???

I run at them screaming and waving my hands over my head.... Seriously though I believe you may be giving them a little too much credit. If you hunt the same stand enough to alter their behavior, you are over-hunting that location.

How close in are they? You could try a buck snort or blow them like they do before they run off.

I get my buddy to come pic me up in a truck that is if u can get a truck to your location, where in a oilfeild with a lot of traffic they usally run and then come back later on.

I am assuming your stand is at a food source. Back your stand far enough off the source that you can move away undetected after dark (50 yards maybe). You may have to trim trees and limbs to get shooting lanes, and you may lose 100% visibility of the field, but its a good trade. I even build a ground blind in front of my stand and keep the trail to the stand swept so that I can approach it undetected if need be (I tend to be late arriving in the afternoon).

Carry a small open reed predator caller. You can do a pretty convincing coyote howl with one.

Fling stones at them with a slingshot if you can get away with the movement.

Have someone drive out to pick you up, the vehicle will scare off the deer.

Re: Intentionally spooking deer from your stand???

Thanks for the input so far. We don't have coyotes, but hell
I'd try anything. Most stands are 20-50 yards. It's all woods and we use feeders or small plots. No way to sneak in the dry leaves. We use an atv in lieu of the truck idea due to brush overhanging the roads. The difficulty is when everyone has deer, nobody wants to get down. These deer are well educated due to a lot of hunting pressure. Just getting down once in front of them can burn a stand for weeks. trail cams confirm they still show up, but it's an hr after dark. I have tried the blowing deer imitation but they usually run into cover and wait to see what happened.

Please keep ideas coming.

Best advice I can give you is make sure its a clean route in and out might have to move the stand. I would also advise not hunting the stand so much. Its a fine line deciding when to hunt. A few years back an old timer told me that some times not hunting is the way to kill big deer. Don't educate them if you cant kill them.

If your sitting up on a food plot plant sorghum with other things around the edge clover etc. I know it won't help this year. But I planted sorghum on my plot this year I was supprized on how many deer would be laying in it and pop up out of no where after sitting in my stand for hours. Most of the time if I spoked them they just went into it a layed down. When I shot my buck there was a doe with him. She went for the feild and layed down. I'm not saying its the best thing ever. It's just the first year I did this and I think I might try it again next year. Also try putting something in your stand that might bang it once in a while when the wind blows. I sit in a metal hut. Nuts and everything hit it. It never seemed to bother the deer

Re: Intentionally spooking deer from your stand???

If you're spooking deer coming in or getting out you probably should relocate. You can get away with doing it the way you are now but that spot will never be a "killer" stand.

Re: Intentionally spooking deer from your stand???

I always try to place stands on travel routes to and from feeding areas. In the morning, getting there early keeps the stand clear for the most part. Sometimes you'll spook 'em on the way in but usually they'll settle down and head back to bedding areas within a half hour or so. In the evening, I usually sit in my tree until a couple of hours after dark just to be safe. Raking paths to my stand usually helps keep the path a bit quieter. If leaves get bad, use a stick to sound like a non-human animal. Make sure not to over-hunt a stand if you get busted or shoot and miss. That's all I have, happy hunting.
