Re: Rem 700 5r 24 in. barrel

My 308 5R likes the following:
175 SMK
43.2 grs. IMR4064
2.233" ogive (+/- 2.810" OAL)
Remington bras trimed to 2.008"
and must important CCI-BR2 primers

This load will shoot under 2" at 300 yds., .5" at 100yds.

Re: Rem 700 5r 24 in. barrel

Mine likes:

FGMM brass, prepped
175SMK
CCI BR2
45gr Varget
2.81 OAL

This averages .5 MOA at 100 yards and about 2715fps @ 900' DA and 80deg. It is what I would consider a max load, no super obvious pressure signs but I didn't want to push further, definitely work up to it as with all loads.

Re: Rem 700 5r 24 in. barrel

Mine has done well with the following:

Sierra 175 HPBT
Win Brass
Rem 9 1/2
RE15 / 45.1
Avg Speed 2623
COL 2.850

Maintains sub-MOA out to at least 700 yards.

Re: Rem 700 5r 24 in. barrel

I was too, but it worked for me. YMMV however. Don't do anything you're not comfortable with.

Re: Rem 700 5r 24 in. barrel

I have also used the 175 SMK with Lapua Brass, 45.1 Varget, CCI BR2 Primers and 2.810 COAL. and got good results but The 178 AMAX just works better.

Here is the components:
Lapua Brass (Cant beat it for concentricity)
CCI BR2 Primers
44.8 gr Varget
2.838 COAL (it fits in the mag)
AVG 2703 FPS

Its more than just the components tho. I use Redding Type S full length sizing dies with a 337 bushing. This leaves about .001 neck tension. The expander ball is removed and the brass is worked very little. I also use a Redding micrometer seater because it just seats the bullet so straight.

This is the last day of load testing.

Re: Rem 700 5r 24 in. barrel

My wife uses a DBM system in her R700 5R and I've notched the feed ramp with a dremel tool and use a type 2 alpha mag to facilitate loading a longer OAL.

This works very well:

168gr AMAX/BTHP
45.8gr Varget
CCI BR2
BHA (winchester brass)
0.003" neck tension
0.020" off the lands

~ 2750 FPS
Easily 1/2 MOA rifle out to 400 yds.

Re: Rem 700 5r 24 in. barrel

anything above 2300 fps is good to go

any slower you will have issues

m118lr is a good place to start. 2600 fps

Re: Rem 700 5r 24 in. barrel

I had a good experienced with following details;

Federal Primed Brass (FC 11)
175 SMK
43.5 of Varget
COAL : 2.810"

The best 3 shots for this load was 1.5 inchs group @ 600 Yards.

Re: Rem 700 5r 24 in. barrel

The only load mine liked was h4895 and 168smk. Tried 155-178 bullets of multiple manufacturers and about 5 different powders. Even with this load it struggled to be 3/4 moa in a bedded mcm. It now wears a bartlien 6 br barrel. First 3 digits in the action were 666, smith recommended i have it exorcism done first. Before he beadblasted the barrel he put a small jesus fish on it for me. He is fairly religious and it is part of his logo anyway.

Re: Rem 700 5r 24 in. barrel

20 inch 5R likes
168SMK over 46gr Varget (.1"s) avg .3"s and FED Match 210 primers loaded at 2.810.
175SMK over 45gr Varget (.2"s) avg .4"s Fed Match 210 primers also loaded at 2.810" (Long throat likes the jump in my gun)
Thanks for the info, i wanna try the 178's, but haven't heard anyone else runnin em.

Re: Rem 700 5r 24 in. barrel

Has anyone tried 2000MR in their Rem 5R? If so, what recipes and results?

Re: Rem 700 5r 24 in. barrel

I've used 2000MR quite a bit and it has become my favorite powder. Here's my favorites for my 5R Remington.

168 Amax 2.870 OAL
48.0 grs. 2000MR
Federal brass trimed to 2.005"
Winchester primers
2770 fps

175 SMK 2.810 OAL
43.3 grs. Reloader 15
Federal brass trimed to 2.005"
Winchester primers
2680 fps

175 SMK 2.820 OAL
47.5 grs. 2000MR
Winchester/Lapau/Hornady brass trimed to 2.005"
Winchester or Federal match primers
2700 fps

190 SMK 2.820 OAL
47.0 grs. 2000MR
Lapau brass trimed to 2.005"
Federal match primers
2685 fps

Any of these loads are 1/2 MOA for my 5R. I have a whole spreadsheet of loads tried in this rifle. The 178 Amax have been not as forgiving with a deep throat as the others listed.

Re: Rem 700 5r 24 in. barrel

ggg 03 brass
standard cci large rifle primer
case .10 under 308 win spec
oal 2.810
178 grain amax
imr 4895 39 grains
under 1/2" @ 125 yards, quarter sized

Do any of you feel that your factory stock 5R barrel gives you lower than normal velocities? Mine seems about 75fps or so slower than everyone elses barrel, using the same loads.

Here is my favorite load for my Rem 700 5R 24 inch barrel. I use a Leupold Mk4 2.5-10 scope. I don't know how you guys can use up to 45gr of Varget. I'm using 42.5gr and get a average velocity of 2850 fps. I'd hate to see what 45gr would do. There are no pressure signs with my gun for this load. It just goes to show you, every gun is different, even if its the same model. Always start low and work up. Where I shoot the elevation is 2200 feet and I belive the temp was in the 50s on this day. This load easily maintains .5 MOA out to 200 yds. I can shoot these groups sometimes but not all the time at 100 yds. The key for me is concentricity of loaded rounds. If loads are concentric to + or - .001" then I can do this often. The problem for me is being able to consistently create concetric rounds. I'm still trying to figure that out. I just started using the Lee collet neck sizing die and now have much better results over all then I did with the Redding neck die with bushing.

I find that my 5R is much faster than normal velocities. I have a Rem 700 Police with 1:12 twist with a 26" barrel and the 5R is faster by nearly 100 fps. The Police variant and the 5R are both faster than published velocities with the loads given in the Sierra manual. Every gun is different though.

Finally found a load using the 178 Amax! My 5R loves the SMK but, wanted to see what all the hype was about with the Amax's.

178 Amax (2.800" OAL) this is a .165" jump in my rifle
43gr Varget
CCI BR2 primer
Winchester case (2nd firing)

Every group fired with this load yesterday was under 1/2" with the best being under .2 MOA. This load was great in my FCP-SR also! It's funny that this load worked because I was sure this gun hated the 178 Amax bullets & Varget (regardless of bullet). Neither performed well previously.

What are you getting for velocities?

I haven't checked the load with my chronograph yet. It's probably around 2590 fps since this is what I got with a similar load with Lapua brass, 43 Varget, 178 Amax (2.955 OAL), and Federal match primers. My shooting time has been short the past month with kids in B-ball. But I'm still trying to get my targets in every week for a friendly rifle competition at our R&G club. Hopefully I get this target back!

Just over a month ago, I picked up a Savage FCP-SR and was working up loads for it with the 178 Amax (to get rid of them) when I decided to try the load in my 5R. Sure glad I did! Prior to finding this load, I could not get them to shoot much under 1". I followed everyone's advice about loading to the lands or just off the lands. It didn't work. My plan with the 5R was to stick with the 175 SMK because I have several, consistent, 1/2" loads. I have over 2 boxes left of the Amax's! The same load is under 1.2" with the Savage also.

I have had good luck in my 5r with the 168 a-max over 48gr of reloder 17, Winchester brass and primers at 2.800 oal. It holds .5 Mao out to 500. I also like the 208 a-max over 46gr of reloder 17 at 2.833 oal. These were worked up to be hunting rounds and work great out of my 5r with no pressure signs, I'm sure they would group better if I gave more effort to load development but like I said they were set up for hunting.
