Re: New to the forum Action vs Rifle help

Welcome to the 'Hide.

What are your plans for the rifle? What's your budget? How do you plan on using the rifle? Do you have a good scope yet? How is your shooting experience?

Answer those questions and we'll be better able to help you out.

Re: New to the forum Action vs Rifle help

Long Rang shooting at the range and a bit of hunting...budget 1K but theres still room. I would like to build one rather then buy say, ACIS or of that sort rifle. Scope, No. Im fresh too this scene. Shot hanguns,ARs few bolt and have always been pretty darn accurate not to brag...And could b cause im young. Im open to any advice.

Re: New to the forum Action vs Rifle help

Buying a base rifle will be cheaper than buying the action alone.

Re: New to the forum Action vs Rifle help

With a $1000 budget, it would be very difficult to purchase a stripped action and perform a proper build. You would be better off by purchasing a complete rifle, and then upgrading it as your budget allows.

Solid choice for a starter rifle. I went with a SPS Varmint in 308 to get started. Take a look at this, LonewolfUSMC from 8541Tactical is here on the 'Hide and has a wealth of information available.

Also consider subscribing to the online training here, it will be well worth the money.

If you have ~ $1K to spend, then just get yourself a Rem 700 5R, like the one for sale here.. This one has accessories that you would probably end up getting anyway.

Another option to consider is a Rem 700 PSS, like the one here from SSC.

If you're willing to put up around $3.5K, I or several others here can recommend many ways to build a rifle from an action.

Re: New to the forum Action vs Rifle help

If you have room why not build one to your spec. And if you don't feel like to spends that kind of money then stick with the suggestion of other go with the Remy 700 5R.

Re: New to the forum Action vs Rifle help

5R is your best bet. Off the rack it should easily shoot MOA

Re: New to the forum Action vs Rifle help

Whats so special about the 5R??I was first leaning towards the SPS but now the 5R based on others. I was gunna build one but the money for something I really know nothing about is pointless. I wanna good starter rifle and then Ill biuld one. I have good fundamentals so I just need a stick that'll work out...Ill do all my own work eventually and do have a bit of gunsmithing skills so Im sure I can manage. Thanks everyone for all the help!!! KEEP IT COMING!

Re: New to the forum Action vs Rifle help

My advise with that budget is also to buy an SPS or PSS and then build off of that platform. If you start out with a stripped action and spend $400 for the action, $325 for a barrel and the pay a smith $250 to chamber, install, crown etc. and you don't even have a stock or a trigger yet let alone have them installed if you cannot do them yourself.
5R is the term used to describe the rifling in the barrel. 5R rifling is how the rifling is designed/cut in the barrel and they shoot very well (Thank you! Boots).
Just my opinion If I had $1000 I would buy the SPS and build when I had the cash.

Re: New to the forum Action vs Rifle help

you could also go with an AAC if you prefer a 20 inch barrel and a 1in10 twist.

SPS Tac has a 20 inch barrel but a 1in12 twist.

if you never plan on reloading and wan the ability top shoot match ammo with different bullet weights and still stay sub moa then the 5R would be a good choice. i saw a guy at the range with one testing out factory match ammo. he had 1 box of each kind and each one was a different grain bullet and he still shot sub moa with each type.

my AAC shoots well with 168gn SMKs, 175gn SMKs, and i shot 20 rounds of 180gn Fusions at the 600 yard line and hit the plate each time even when the wind picked up (just wanted to test out how accurate the hunting bullet was).

either way you go I'm sure you will enjoy your rifle and you will find a lot of great advice here

Re: New to the forum Action vs Rifle help

+1 Rem 5R, you can get a 24" or a threaded 20" (which is what I got) I haven't.
yet seen a 5R that wouldn't shoot factory 168SMK's sub MOA, and with a reloading set up and some Varget this is the norm for 3 shots

Another reason is that they are SS, I like that fact due to hunting in all conditions, but if your a Varmint hunter you may wanna ceracoat it

This is my 20" before I installed a Brake. If your wanting to buy an action, you can forget the 1K range, you should have that or more in your optic if your gonna put it in a chasis. It will do what you want it to with factory, and better with reloading. I have a cpl custom rigs that won't outshoot it, but I also have a custom that will smoke it. Scopes... Weaver Tactical, Vortex, Mk4, and on up to the USO's, SM, etc. But if you want to buy one click this link, and tell Scott, I sent ya. Youll love it.

Re: New to the forum Action vs Rifle help

how do I get ahold of scott?? I think I want the 5R! Now just gotta find a good deal. If he can help then thatd be the plan.

Re: New to the forum Action vs Rifle help

CLICK THE LINK! That's his site. How you get a hold of him is up to you. Send him a letter, text him, or CALL him.

Re: New to the forum Action vs Rifle help

That PSS from SSC is hard to beat for th the value/options you get. IMO It is a better rifle than the 5R. you could have the PTG DBM put in for 150$ and be all set up.
