Equipment: I have a Surgeon 591 action with a Jewell HVR trigger (Rem 700 style w/ safety, no bolt release). The trigger was installed by Surgeon Rifles and I have not adjusted or manipulated any settings except as required to fire the rifle.

The rifle is firing BHA (Winchester) brass with uniformed primer pockets and CCI BR2 primers.

Problem: Roughly every 1/20-1/30 rounds I receive a light primer strike. In the event of a light strike, if I rechamber and fire the round, it goes off normally.

My wife's rifle, a Rem 700 w/ a Timney trigger, has not experienced a single light primer strike issue despite shooting roughly the same # of rounds. In my mind, this rules out the primers being the issue.

    Troubleshooting so far:

I removed the firing pin from the bolt and rigorously cleaned the internals, including the firing pin hole. While I would say the internals were a bit dirty, they were not filthy, as I only have 650 rounds through the rifle. I also squirted a little bit of lighter fluid on the trigger and dried it out with canned air. My last range session of ~ 20 rounds after cleaning I had no light strikes, but today I had 1 light strike of ~ 25 rounds.

I would say the rifle is well cared for and has not been subjected to rigorous abuse. I believe there is no chance that dirt, debris, etc. has seeped into the trigger causing problems.

I do not load hot. My .308 load consists of 178 BTHPs and 44gr of Varget, and I clock about 2700 fps. The primers and case head show absolutely no signs of overpressure.

I have found the Jewell manual online here:
    http://www.accurateshooter.com/technical-articles/jewell-trigger-users-manual/

However, this trigger is something I am very reluctant to adjust without some more experienced guidance, especially since some of you may direct me elsewhere.

    Any help is tremendously appreciated.

Re: Help please - Light Primer Strikes w/ Jewell HVR

I suspect the primer pockets were uniformed too deeply.

Re: Help please - Light Primer Strikes w/ Jewell HVR

Ok. I thought that the design of the uniformer was to prevent excessive material from being removed from the primer pocket (it's the design from RCBS that screws on to the Hornady 3 in 1 case prep set with the low torque motor). I guess I could consider that, except that I'm using the same brass on my wife's rifle and she's not getting any light primer strikes.

Re: Help please - Light Primer Strikes w/ Jewell HVR

What is the firing pin protrusion on each of the 2 rifles, and can you measure thedeating depth of the primers prior to firing?

Re: Help please - Light Primer Strikes w/ Jewell HVR

I'm not able to get good measurements on primer seating depth; sorry.

For the rifle with issues (591 w/ Jewell), I measured the protrusion length at 0.0530".

    For the rifle that's working find (Rem 700 w/ Timney 510U), I measured a 0.050" protrusion length.

Re: Help please - Light Primer Strikes w/ Jewell HVR

What makes you think it's the trigger? How old is the rifle? How many rounds? Did this suddenly happen or slowly over a period of time? Personally I'd check the firing pin spring.

Re: Help please - Light Primer Strikes w/ Jewell HVR

Are all the primers from the same lot? I would think it pretty unlikely with the BR2s, but there is always the chance that you got some hard primers. You mentioned your wife's rifle not having the same problems. Are you shooting the same ammo in her rifle?

Re: Help please - Light Primer Strikes w/ Jewell HVR

Have you tried removing the mainspring and pushing the cocking piece manually while the trigger is pulled to see if something is binding? Or swapping triggers to isolate the problem to gun or trigger?

Re: Help please - Light Primer Strikes w/ Jewell HVR

Only 650 rounds down it; pretty new, less than 1 year old. My wife shoots a .308 too, but I load 168s in her rifle with 45.8gr Varget.

I can't swap triggers because the Jewell doesn't have the bolt release (her Rem relies on the trigger bolt release).

What I'm going to do is get a new lot of brass. From talking with Rhys, perhaps I've uniformed too much material out.

Part of me thinks that her 510U sear has more cocking force than my Jewell, but I'm hesitant to adjust the Jewell; to me, that's almost like opening up and tinkering with a Swiss Watch. If new brass solves the issue, that will work fine for me.
