Who sells Dessicant/ Silica packs?

Re: Who sells Dessicant/ Silica packs?

Lowe's sells this stuff in a blue bag called "Damprid". You have to put it in a small container as it turns to liquid as it pulls moisture out of the air. I use a cup. It's very inexpensive and may be worth a try.

+1 for DampRid. You can get it by the case at their website. Lasts a while so you might not need a case.

Downside of dessicant packs is you cant tell when they stop working. DampRid crystals turn to liquid as they absorb moisture so you periodically pour off the liquid and add more crystals.

thats funny cause I buy all mine at walmart...go to the closet section. You will see mothballs and random what nots. They sell these plastic containers called "closet dehumidifiers" its just a plastic tub full of silica gel. I have kept a few in my safe with my goldn rod for awhile now and they work great. only like 2 bucks a pop..you can dry em out or just throw em away..either way

best of luck

Get a few evadry e500 units for about $15-$20 ea and be done with it. when they turn pink, plug them in to dry them out and stick them back in the safe. easy as it gets.

You should be able to find the raw material you need at any of the local Hobby Lobby type stores. They sell silica gel/crystals for the purpose of drying flowers and such. You can buy it in bulk and use something such as a coffee filter to make whatever size you need.

Re: Who sells Dessicant/ Silica packs?

I was also going to recommend Hobby Lobby type stores. I bought a big bag of the silica crystals there and bought some of their little ziplock type bags from the jewelry section then proceeded to use a large needle (which I hijacked from my wife's sewing supplies) to punch several holes in. After converting the small ziplocks to holy bags I filled them with the silica packs and put them in my ammo bags that went into my ammo cans. They're still a nice blue color (indicating low/no moisture) and left a couple of those bags out to see if they worked, within a day they were pink (indicating that they were used up for absorbtion). It worked great for me and I'm in it like $14 or so for all of it. I think that the bags cost like $2 and the big bag of silica costs about $11 or $12 and the small bags of silica are around $6. And with Hobby Lobby you can get the 40% off coupons online almost all the time. Plus, punching lots and lots of little holes into a short stack of small ziplock bags with a needle is good stress relief. But don't do it on your wife's favorite coffee table... It is apparently frowned upon, at least in this establishment...

Check with the local dive shops. I have several that I purchase from a local shop here. They come in defferent sizes and can be put in the oven to recharge once they are too saturated. I keep me in the rifle case in my cruiser for work. Never had the first sing of rust on either my shotgun or rifle.

Harbor Freight stores sell silica crystals in bulk for cheap. Usually in the air tools section.

Re: Who sells Dessicant/ Silica packs?

Any store which carries a good line of electronics should have lots of little packs, which I'm guessing, typically get tossed. So in a pinch, if you make a contact at Best Buys, or Kragen etc, you can get stacks of the little one's for free. And I imagine that 1/2 dozen or so in an ammo can would do the trick.

In a pinch, cat litter works also. Toss half a cup into an old sock or stocking, tie it shut & you should be GTG. That & it too would be reusable via drying it out in the oven. It's cheap & KISS.

Rice can work as well too. Ever notice how in some resturants there's rice in the bottoms of the salt shakers, especially in humid climates... it's to prevent the salt from clumping.
When I'm out at sea, I always make sure that there's a bit of rice in any jar which has matches inside. Ditto for the survival matches I have in my coat, & packs, + camping gear. It works both for paper ones as well as strike anywhere's.

Rice is also often used to help with drying out electronics which get dunked. It helps to suck the moisture out when you place the soaked item in a bag full of it.
Though depending on what it is, often times I'll rinse the item in isopropyl alcohol first, to flush out as much of the water as possible. As the alcohol dries quick & clean. Particularly when compared to say, salt water.

We import some screws from Taiwan. They add these little Silica packs to every box. We just throw them away...

Aks your friends if someone is importing stuff from overseas and you will have plenty if it for free.
