Just received my first new AR. Its a DPMS Bull 20. Any quick tips to do to it, like polish anything and any advise besides a collapsable cleaning rod to put in the standard but stock. As always thanks in advance.

Seriously brother,
I wasn't intending to be a smart ass, I really do believe you will learn more by shooting. You'll learn more about what you like and don't like, what the rifle likes and doesn't like.

Become a Rifleman, Learn your weapons dope from 7 yards to 700 yards, shoot in the wind, shoot in the rain, shoot when its hot, shoot when its cold. Shoot when you are tired, shoot when you have run 100 meters. Shoot when you have to pee real bad. shoot when your shooting buddies are loading up the truck to go home. Shoot in Low Light conditions, Shoot a black target in bright sunlight. When you're not shooting dry fire.

Once you've figured it all out it will mean more to you and you won't give a rats ass about what somebody somewhere said on the internet because you've done it.

Then teach somebody else to shoot.

Shoot when you have to pee real bad. Is that like shooting with your legs crossed real tight. LOL

Shoot laying in an ant hill too! On s serious note, lube it good, soot the snot out of it. Then tear it support and build a piglet instead of the pig it is now.

Re: Have my 1st new AR. Any tips?

I know this may sound simple, but if his is your first ar...

Familiarize yourself with all aspects of the upper and lower receiver. Try to learn how each part functions; maintaince and problem solving is much easier when you understand how everything operates independently.
The spring like sound you will hear when you fire is normal, it comes from the buffer tube depressing the buffer spring.
-Learn how to completely disassemble an reassemble the bolt and carrier:
-Learn areas that have more friction and require lubrication
-Learn how to remove the pistol grip, safety, and trigger assembly
-You need a punch to remove the trigger and hammer pins
-Learn how to spot cycling problems from being over/under gassed
-Or, weight issues with your buffer tube
-Magazine tension or level issues
-Learn possible causes of different FTF's and FTE's
-223 chambering does not mean 5.56 is ok to shoot
-Consider an upgraded charging handle for 'one side' manipulation
-Get a MagLula Loader, you'll thank me later. Easiest way to load loose ammo if not using stripper clips

Have fun,
Hope you enjoy your new rifle-

I will warn you now. You have just contracted what is known as BRD ( black rifle disease). You will soon have many black rifles, of differing configurations and calibers.
Welcome to the addiction. </div></div>

This is exactly what I was going to say. It may be your first AR rifle but I bet it wont be your last..!!!!! And next thing you know you will have numerous calibers of these so called black rifles.. Shoot the piss out of all of them and yes I said THEM.. You will soon own another one...LOL

cut up your credit cards, quick!!
Great choice for a bench gun but a little heavy for the tactical/training stuff. I had the exact same gun and loved shooting it!

Re: Have my 1st new AR. Any tips?

Shoot it . Shoot it more !! Learn to shoot irons sights and have fun doing it with challenging targets.

Re: Have my 1st new AR. Any tips?

Practice with it shooting from unusual, and field type positions. The only time to shoot it from a bench or rest is when you are doing your initial zero. The more difficult (within reason) you make your own practice sessions, the more you will improve.

If all you do is shoot huge IPSC targets from a bench rest, you won't improve nearly as fast as if you shoot paper plates placed at 50 and 100 yards from offhand. If you get to the point where you can hit the 50 and 100 yard paper plates (about 8-10 inches) alternating so you have three shots on each, and hit your intended target 80% of the time, you are getting pretty good.

Start out with only the 50 yard plate, then when you hit it every time, put it at 100 yards, and start over. If it is possible to move the plate out by 5-10 yards every practice session, that would be even better. Don't move the plate further out until you can hit it reliably. You are trying to practice to HIT, not just to shoot.

And like it was said above: Shoot the piss out of it.

Re: Have my 1st new AR. Any tips?

shoot the crap out of it, replace the barrel and do it again and again, you'll figure out the rest as you go.
congrats and have fun.
