What is the best IR Illuminator for a helmet mount?

Re: What is the best helmet IR illuminator

Best at what? You looking for something with a long range beam, smallest, cleanest mount, what are your requirements?

The Surefire 952v with the IR cover is capable of putting a lot of light out as is the torch pro but they are your average weapons light size.If size and weight isn't a concern then those are 2 solid choices.

Re: What is the best helmet IR illuminator

Thank you papa,is the torch pro to big for a helmet mount?i have this mount on my gun already looking for something a little smaller and at a good price,I have heard good things about surefire m-1 for helmet mount. What are your thoughts?

What are your expectations/wants of this light and intended use? You can strap any light to a helmet these days big or small and put an IR cover on it and viola. If you're looking for distance and power, the two I mentioned above are my suggestions. If you're not concerned with distance and power, pretty much any light with an IR cover or an improvised IR cover/paint job will probably work for you.

Re: What is the best helmet IR illuminator

I don't do any hunting yet,but wanted a light to attach to my helmet for extended light for the pvs system.I have the torch on my gun for Long distance but wanted a IR for my helmet for walking and shorter distance. Thanks again for helping out a rookie shooter!!!

What mount are you using for the surefire m-1 to attach to your helmet?

Your NVGs should have a built in IR illuminator thats good for close in tasks like map reading thats good out to roughly 6-8 feet. If for some reason your model doesn't, for your stated intended use you could use any number of the smaller flashlights and or the lights offered by Princeton tech or the surefire helmet light with IR capabilities. The latter two would be your best choice as they offer a small size/weight and the ability to go between white /red/IR light.

Re: What is the best helmet IR illuminator

Yea I was thinking about IR illuminator to cover 100 plus yards coverage,I like the surefire m-1 size and cost ,I think is about the same price as the surefire light with IR .
Thanks again

I thought you said that was what the light on your weapon was for?If you are expecting to cover 100 yard you will need to use the first two I suggested.Any thing else is going to disappoint you. Quiet honestly, you will use white light more often than the IR. NVGs give you pretty good clarity in just about 95% of circumstances and walking around with an IR flood light on be it on your head and or weapon with other people wearing NVGs is akin to walking around in the dark with a white light and flashing it all over the place.I think most people overestimate their need to really use an IR light source when using NVGs

Re: What is the best helmet IR illuminator

Very good information on this subject ,I have never used night vision before and really do not have a good idea what works and doesn't work.I just see everyone has a IR on there helmet so that you do not have to look through your gun to see I think.Just trying to learn much as possible in this new area.I really appreciate your help on answering my questions.

Re: What is the best helmet IR illuminator

No problem. My suggestion to you is to put one of the first two I mentioned on your weapon with the pressure switch butt cap. Use a Princeton tech or Sure fire helmet light with white/red/IR on your helmet. A lot of people copy what they see guys in the box using and don't always understand why a guy might be running a piece of kit a certain way. I always get a laugh out of seeing guys with bungees on their helmet and a Wilcox lanyard. It's like having 2 bipods on your gun. If you use the bungees and set your NVGs up right, you don't need a lanyard.

Re: What is the best helmet IR illuminator

I was wondering that myself,I do not even have a bungee on my helmet,I guess there for the old helmet mounts that wobbled?i did order the L-g 24 wilcox mount system with the lanyard . Thank you for the information on the IR lights also.I bet a lot of people like me look at the pics on this site and want to order the same thing!!!!, it seems best to ask folks with the experience what works best first.
Thanks again Papa

Re: What is the best helmet IR illuminator

Bungees do help with wobble if your mount has play in it. All NVGs have a lanyard hole on them, some come with a small metal ring, some just have the hole. We run a gutted piece of 550 cord through the hole to create a small loop. The hook of the bungees goes into the 550 and is covered with a piece of masking tape or 100mph tape. If your NVGs get knocked out of the mount the bungees keep them from falling free and keep them up on your head, not dangling around down by your chest. This is how we rig them up for freefall when jumping out of aircraft and it works fine. If your buying an opscore helmet it will come with bungees. You can also add a bungee yourself if you don't have an opscore, thats how we used to do it before opscore built them into their helmets.

Re: What is the best helmet IR illuminator

Ive had to wear a special helmet since i was a kid, i mount all sorts of tacticaly things to it

Re: What is the best helmet IR illuminator

Thank you for that detailed information on bungee. With the wilcox g-24 mount and the lanyard that I purchased would I still need the bungee? I think with this new mount and the lanyard I should be ok? Are the bungees for the older mounts? The lanyard should do the same thing far as the NV google falling off the helmet to capture it from falling to the ground.

Re: What is the best helmet IR illuminator

You should be fine with the lanyard for retention. If you find you have play in your mount or it develops over time you may want to add bungees yourself. It's easy to do, 4ea cable clamps and one thin bungee with small hooks. Route it like it is in the picture below and you're golden.

Which helmet do you have or are you getting to mount this nvg on?

Did the helmet come with arc rails on it? you should either have bungees with it or your rails have holes in the front where you can install bungees yourself. If thats the case, cut one bungee in half ,remove the arc rail ,fold the end of the bungee back on itself and zip tie it,cut off excess zip tie, install behind arc rail. Your bungees shouldn't be too short/long when you're done, you should be able to hook the hook onto the vas shroud under a little tension but you need enough stretch left in the bungee to attach the hook to the NVG and provide tension to hold the NVG steady.

Re: What is the best helmet IR illuminator

It has the arc rails on it and a spot for the bungee cords to attach too,but did not come with any cords.it looks kids like the ops core helmet. Are there any company's that sell the bungee cords?
Thanks papa
Ron

Re: What is the best helmet IR illuminator

yeah, Home Depot, lowes and even walmart sell the small bungees in packages for a few bucks Cut one in half like I described above and install.
