id really like to. im still doing more research whether modifying airsoft stocks for a firearm is gunsmithing which requires an FFL.

would be a lot easier and cleaner if i had a milling machine. im just using an angle grinder and a dremel.

Re: .22LR Dragunov SVD using Marlin 60

I wouldn't think so, as folks don't need an FFL or any special licenses to put their barreled actions into any stocks they choose as long as all NFA rules are followed.

Re: .22LR Dragunov SVD using Marlin 60

Hey defcon, my son was looking over my shoulder when I saw this post and his eyes about popped out of his head with "dad...wayyy cool...". Needless to say the pressure to make one starting coming from him immediately. I had an old 60 in the safe he knew was being ignored. SO I ordered the SVD boneyard kit, which arrived yesterday and am in the process of fitting it out.

Question for you though: on the flashider, how the heck does it come off the existing barrel? I can't find a pin or hex screw and I don't want to destroy it during removal.

Any help would be appreciated!

hahaha nice! you should show him my other .22 conversions. i have over 30 different stocks that will fit a .22 inside.

are you willing to heavily modify your Marlin 60? you cant really put it back to its original form unless you buy a new trigger housing.

i chopped off the trigger guard to make it work.

ill do a video tonight and a take down explaining what i did.

from what i remember the flash hider just slipped off. i think the original owner loosened it.
since its an airsoft gun, they typically glue the flash hider so youre going to have to use a heat gun and melt that glue/adhesive off. then it should slide off.

i just reused the SVD flash hider and just slipped it over the Marlin 60 barrel.
i just used a rubber hammer and tapped it down all the way until it was snug. i can always drill a hole into the flash hider and a little notch on the Marlin 60 barrel and use a small screw.
i reused the SVD trigger guard. drilled a new hole and screwed it into the pistol grip
i chopped off 3/4 of the Marlin 60 trigger housing.
i reused the SVD magazine release. had to chop off part of it to make it fit.
i had to cut off several mounting tabs in the SVD front handguard because it was dropping downward in an angle.
drill a few holes into the front handguard to keep it sturdy.
drilled a huge rectangle on the SVD receiver to have easy access to the action and to install the trigger housing.

feel free to ask me questions and i can help guide you to your first build

Here's another Marlin 60 I'm working on and explaining what I did to make it fit. Should be done this weekend.

Re: .22LR Dragunov SVD using Marlin 60

Holy shit. I had no idea the model 60 was the gun I first started shooting on like 20+ years ago.

How does that tube-loading work with your airsoft "shells" for lack of better term.

tube loading is normal. im buying a couple of speed loaders to make it easier.

Re: .22LR Dragunov SVD using Marlin 60

The muzzle breaks are typically held on by some sort of super glue or something. Take the barrel off and dip it in a pot of boiling water for a little bit. This will loosen the glue and allow you to screw the break off. Just be careful as many of the airsoft muzzle breaks are +/- 14 mm threads. So make sure you are turning it the correct way

Re: .22LR Dragunov SVD using Marlin 60

OK, I will try it Tuesday, off for a long weekend up-north to shoot!

Re: .22LR Dragunov SVD using Marlin 60

That is definitely unique!

Re: .22LR Dragunov SVD using Marlin 60

Nice, you might be onto something there. Better be careful, someone from Marlin might see this and the next thing you know, they will have this out and be making money off of your idea.

Re: .22LR Dragunov SVD using Marlin 60

Pretty darn neat. If you put a fake suppressor on there from a distance people would thinh you were shooting a real full sized suppressed rifle. Nice creativity.

Yes, because something that doesn't load the same, charge the action the same, have the trigger in the same area, or have the safety activated the same way makes a great trainer.
wink.gif

If the trigger area looked better, bolt area looked better, and there wasn't a lack of any type of structural piece in front of the hand guard then I would say this would be a neat little conversion, all of them would, but they all look just cobbled together poorly in my opinion.

im still making a structural piece on the handguard. ill be using epoxy steel putty around the barrel inside the handguard and bolt it in.

thanks for your opinion but theyre still fun and awesome to shoot.

You can modify whatever you want for yourself without getting ATF approval, as long as it doesn't violate teh NFA or GCA.

HOWEVER, if you are modifying it for sale then you wold need to get a manufacturers FFL. Making, modifying, converting are all manufacturing activities and the ATF considers STOCK work as gunsmithing. Alot of other fees needed as well.

We looked into this for another project/customer and it isn't worth it unless you are going to do it full tilt and have a bunch of $$$ to dump into licensing etc...

ah crap.
ill just make how to videos then.

ive researched it and the ITAR annual registration fee is the killer.

thanks for the heads up

btw whats GCA?

Re: .22LR Dragunov SVD using Marlin 60

There we go...

Ok, hey defcon, first let me say YOU ARE MY HERO doing gun mods to your 60's for your son. As I mentioned in my earlier posts I did this for my son after he saw the 1st post of yours in this thread, and IF I would have known what a PITA it was going to be I would have just bought him something else off the shelf (and even been willing to pay a lot just to get out of doing this conversion). But hindsight is 20/20, so....

Bout 8-10 hours total into it. Although most of the time was spent disassembling it, then re-assembing it to get a part filed "just right" to fit, then going through the assembly/disassembly process over and over. Needless to say I learned why we pay the "smiths" what we do when they work on our rifles!

Unfortunately, live-fire testing won't be until (hopefully) over Christmas vacation.

By the way, I noticed a PSO scope on yours. Did you have that lying around or did you order it specifically? If ordered, where from? I'm trying to decide on just a cheap, plain rail mount that I put a generic scope on (which I have many of lying around), or making it look more "real" with a PSO, even though they're a little pricey (figured I've come this far and my kids' going to start asking for it anyway).

Also, thanks for all the hints given above!

ah niceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. congrats!

good job man. im sure your son will love it. and i have a feeling this aint your first conversion. youll probably develop that evil black rifle disease with these .22 dress up kits.

i think it took me about total of 4-5 hours. about 1 hour a day after work.

buying it off the shelf is too easy. you get some pride into customizing something special and unique that makes it priceless. i also think to myself whenever im buying a new stock thats never been done i accept that its going to be a PITA. but its totally worth it when its done and test fired to see how it holds up. so when you do go to the range, you will notice the WTF looks/reactions that ive been getting. its pretty hilarious so just look out for that.

usually the first ones are the hardest but it gets easier and faster after your first conversion.

what did you do with the front part of the handguard? also what did you do with the safety lever?

i got lucky and found the PSO scope on ebay and paid $80 plus shipping. i had to go with the PSO to complete the look. it didnt fit perfectly because it was too tight to fit.

check evike.com, airsplat.com, airsoftgi.com, airsoftmegastore.com, ebay.com, craigsnationwide.com and craigslist.org for the PSO scope

how old are you kids by the way?

here's my latest Marlin 60 conversion. my 2 year old wanted to hang out with me when i was taking these pics. show it your kids these.

Yeah you're right, I'm already eyeing the AICS / Savage MKII conversion so my daughter (who is now jealous of "her brother's SVD") has a nice tacticool looking bolt action, well and for me too!

Safety lever - I just ground down the inside pin until it was just about to lose it's hold on the retaining pin, then I was able to slide the action in with almost no room left.

Front part of hand guard - I had to mercilessly file out the bottom of the handguard plastic to make it fit that PITA feed tube (most of my extra time in fitting revolved around making room for that feed tube), and then the front handguard cap I did the same, just filed out a portion for the feed tube to fit. The front gas block actually has a set screw holding it in place to keep the front hand guard piece "locked in".

Decided against the scope for now. Too many funds tied up in some new rifles for Dad

that is awesome! ya your daughter definitely looks like she needs another conversion. glad your son is happy with the SVD.

thanks for the pics on the gas tube. ill modify mine and get it fitted.

im about to finish my AICS/Savage MKII conversion this week.
im also planning to purchase that $150 Viperskin pistol grip version for the G96 stock in a few months. sometime in May though. i havent seen this done yet so ill make an attempt to do it
