If you had a choice, not considering price of ammo, what caliber would you choose for all around accurate shooting? I personally would keep my .17 hmr because its been amazingly accurate at any range i shoot it at. Whats your Opinion ?

I made the choice...both.
For hunting I prefer the 17 hmr.
For the range the 22lr gets the nod.
Why? 17 hmr has the flat trajectory,
ideal for small game head shots.
At the range, watching the subsonic 22lr rainbow trajectory
through the scope as it arcs 100 yards to the target
and compensating for wind drift is just plain fun.
MOA accuracy from both calibers means there's no need to choose one.
Which explains why I bought a CZ 455 combo and a Lilja 22lr barrel.

btw, Dan Lilja replied to an email of mine,
17 hmr match grade barrel for the CZ 455 is coming out soon.

Re: .17 HMR vs. 22 LR

22lr for me.

A high grade 22 rifle + nice scope + sub moa + challenge in wind + small steel targets + rangefinder + long range = awesomeness.

The next step past that for me is a little centerfire. Speaking of which I just ordered some 30 grain .27bc 17 cal. At 3800 fps the combo will be "that" next step up in awesomeness

.22 WMR...

Because when you need to anchor it at any reasonable distance... .17 HMR is for paper, stuff you wouldn't waste a round on to eat(and could fill your belly on) or pikers.

Preferably, out of a REM 597. Remy and Ruger couldn't get the .17 HMR right (fizix is a bitch) but Ruger still couldn't get the .22 WMR right.

Sub 1" (better than 1MOA) at 100yds... don't need no FOP, .17 HMR. I'm a Dapper Dan Man.

Truth be told, if I had to shoot for pink slips, .17 HMR all the da-da-damn way.

Re: .17 HMR vs. 22 LR

Until the wind kicks up...

My 40X more than holds its own head to head with a .17 out to 100; then the .17 takes over. But if it is breezy? Forget it.

Re: .17 HMR vs. 22 LR

17HMR beats 22 in every aspect except for price. I really do not understand this argument. We spend hundreds of dollars on good rifles, good optics and accessories, yet the price of ammo should be a moot point.

If you want to shoot a good round, you're going to obviously pay more vs. shooting something cheaper.

At around $10 for a box of 50 rounds of 17gr VMAX, I spend maybe $20 shooting 100 rounds with my 17HMR that I enjoy shooting a lot more than my old 22lr.

Now, the only in-between for these two rounds is the 17HM2, which still out-shoots the 22lr and is cheaper than HMR.

Any possibility of hookin a brother up on the 30gr ammo ?? got a link ??

Re: .17 HMR vs. 22 LR

As much as I enjoy my 22LR, if I had to pick a single rimfire for everything, it's going to be 17HMR. It's cheap enough for plinking, and powerful enough for most of the small game hunting I do. It's also dead accurate, and not nearly as finicky on ammo. Honestly, at 100, I can group my 22LR as tight as my 17HMR, but no fliers from dud ammo, rim thickness, and all of that other BS that we deal ith in every box of 22LR ammo.

I do enjoy 22LR, and will continue to shoot plenty of it. 17HMR is just a much better choice, when it counts, IMHO.

It's not 17HMR ammo. I'm referring to the projectiles only shot out of 17 Rem handloads.

The bullets which arrived today BTW are the Woodchuck Dens 30 golds.

I have a 17-6.5 Grendel Ackley improved reamer coming soon to do a custom build. I'll be able to get 4300 fps when the project is done

I shoot at Elm Fork in Dallas just about every Saturday unless I'm at a Tac/Multigun Comp or behind on the "honey do" list.

You'd be welcome anytime. How 'bout for couple beers/margaritas following?

Re: .17 HMR vs. 22 LR

I like the stakes Rico! My 17 is at the ranch in West Texas at the moment. It pretty much stays there through the hunting season. I built a range out there so I could shoot and hunt in the same place. I don't get up to Dallas much anymore but maybe we could work something out. Not a hunter yourself?

Re: .17 HMR vs. 22 LR

I only have a little experience with the HMR, and so far it is impressive. With that said, cost of ammo must be taken into consideration if you shoot as much as we do. If you only shoot a few boxes, I get it. BUT, we shoot several cases of .22 ammo per year. The cost difference is real in those volumes

Re: .17 HMR vs. 22 LR

Blackbrush,

I don't hunt big game much anymore... Texas whitetail hunting has gotten boring for me especially after shoooting a couple hundred over the last ten years for the King Ranch (ex-wife's nephew was a Ranch Mgr) to cull out does the biologists said had to go (the upside is that the Food Bank gets a LOT of meat every year). I shot one pig this past Spring but really only because I couldn't resist a 550 yard shot on it! LOL!!

I mainly do wing shooting now (dove, pheasant and quail). I grew up with a shotgun in my hands on the farms of Upstate NY and I've never really gotten out of them.

"Shoot" me a PM with where you're and maybe we can work out something and stop cluttering this guys thread! LOL!
