Primer mixup

I'm trying to determine if I need to tear apart about 30 rounds of .223. This morning I realized that last night I inadvertently used Remington small pistol primers (5.5 ver) instead of the small rifle primers. I'd imagine the that pistol primers don't burn as hot as rifle primers.

I doubt the hotness much matters but the inability to withstand some 40-50% more chamber pressure just might.

Re: Primer mixup

You would be best to re-assemble the rounds with the correct primer. Rifle primers are thicker and take more firing pin pressure to ignite. Especially in a semi-automatic rifle such as an AR, you run the risk of slam fire as well as the extra presures from more gunpowder exceeding design limits on the pistol primer. An error going the other way could have consequences and the advice would be the same. With this error, I really don't see using them as is as an option especially since you have only 30 to break down.

Re: Primer mixup

Cant say for sure the primer cups are any weaker than the rifle primers but i wouldnt wana be behind the gun if they werent

Re: Primer mixup

a single popped primer is not that big of a deal, and in cool temp highly unlikely, I would empty the brass with the trigger until/ unless a primer pops

Re: Primer mixup

Thanks all - I figured that was probably the best bet to disassemble them. Typically I prime all my brass beforehand, but I was trying to use up the last of a lot of bullets and inadvertently grabbed the wrong primers for those last 30 bullets.

Mental note to self, don't reload when you're tired or in a hurry.
