Guy accidentally kills his 7 year old son...

Re: Guy accidentally kills his 7 year old son...

So sad to hear this.

Re: Guy accidentally kills his 7 year old son...

People that irresponsible have to have these things happen to them before they figure it out. When it takes killing your own son to reinforce muzzle control, finger off the trigger, how to properly clear a weapon, etc. it's just tragic. It's pathetic.

"A man's handgun went off while he was holding it.." Yeah, <span style="font-style: italic">that's</span> how it happens.

Re: Guy accidentally kills his 7 year old son...

There is a quote from aviation about a pilot that dies from his mistakes that always struck me as having a lot of truth. It doesn't apply perfectly here but the sentiment I have for these incidents is similar:

"Whenever we talk about a pilot who has been killed in a flying accident, we should all keep one thing in mind. He called upon the sum of all his knowledge and made a judgment. He believed in it so strongly that he knowingly bet his life on it. That his judgment was faulty is a tragedy, not stupidity. Every instructor, supervisor, and contemporary who ever spoke to him had an opportunity to influence his judgment, so a little bit of all of us goes with every pilot we lose."

The applicable part for all of us gun owners is the last bit - "every instructor, supervisor, and contemporary who ever spoke to him had an opportunity to influence his judgement."

Responsible gun owners need to be instructors even if it isn't in an official capacity. Your actions may very well prevent a future tragedy from happening.

Re: Guy accidentally kills his 7 year old son...

I keep my firearms locked up drum tight around my son.

He's too young to teach him about them yet.

Even though I know things are safe, it is still my single greatest fear. Something terrible happening with kids and guns.

I don't think I could live with myself if I shot my son.

As far as I'm concerned, this man's sentence has been served, and will continue for the rest of his life.

That father had to live with that tragedy for the rest of his life.

Still, failure to follow Rule 1 of the Four Rules of Gun Safety: every gun is ALWAYS loaded.

Re: Guy accidentally kills his 7 year old son...

Let me start by expressing my condolences to the family. As the father of a young son, stories like this have a visceral impact. I don't like hearing them, but while often unpleasant, learning from the mistakes of others sure beats personal experience when it comes to matters of life-and-death.

Part of the problem is the way that this article is written:

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">A man's handgun went off while he was holding it as he got into his truck in the parking lot of a western Pennsylvania gun store Saturday, and the shot killed his 7-year-old son, authorities said.</div></div>

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">He was attempting to get inside and reached to put the handgun in the center storage console when it fired, they said.</div></div>

Both of those sentences, being written in the passive sense, make it seem as if the handgun discharged by its own free will. It didn't; someone loaded a round into the chamber, and then someone pointed the muzzle at a child, and then someone pulled the trigger. Human activity, not mechanical malfunction, was at the heart of this tragedy.

Four rules, people - drill them home whenever you get a chance. As the saying goes, the life you save may be your own.
