Hey all,
I got a sporterized Remington 1903 in 30-06. Its got a nice made wood stock thats Pure American Classic style, with a Redfield reciever sight. Its not been drilled and tapped for scope mounts and I want a scope. Its got the orig. barrel on it and its a bit worn but still shoots good. I DONT want to drill and tap the reciever.
(because I want to be able to load it
with the stripper clips that I have) I was thinkin a 22" or so Bartlein barrel with a NECG front sight, AR-10 flash hider and a nice Leupold VXR SCOUT 1.25-4x20 scope. Trouble is, how do I attach the scope? I was thinkin to have Bartlein build me a custom contour with a 10" cylinder length of 1.200" then taper a bit to be just big enough for a 5/8x24 thread and the proper shoulder for crush washer for a finished length of 20" or 22". And Flute it just for fun. Then drill and tap the back end (Cylinder) of the barrel, get a pic rail scope mount blank, drill and counterbore it for 4 8-40 scope base screws and go from there.
My question to you all is, what do you think about the scope base being attached to the barrel? Good idea? Bad? Im not goin for 1 hole groups. 3/4" groups at 100 yds is fine. I will probably free float the barrel.
Any suggestions?
Thanks for the input.

Mounting to the upper is permanent. READ cant change it after you drill and tap. Good accuracy but you have to decide what you want. If you're not sure, DON'T

Re: American Classic Scout Rifle Will It Shoot?

Mounting scopes on the barrel ahead of the receiver is nothing new.

pitfa's comments were in regard to saving the receiver, since one of the most value damaging things you can do to a classic military rifle is modify it in a way that is permanent (tapping receiver, cutting barrel, etc)

Lots of rifles have barrel mounted scopes, and if it's done right, they have just as much potential for precision. The problem is it's much more difficult machining, it's not as easily configurable like receiver mounts, and the scope choice is very limited.

Old target rifles have barrel mounted scopes, and lots of rifles have the so called "scout" mounting options.

Re: American Classic Scout Rifle Will It Shoot?

Do an barrel block type mount with the thick side upmost with clamp screws for reuse later. Or you can sleeve the barrel cylinder portion and drill and tap the sleeve. Epoxy either in place. The top can be milled flat to mount a Picatinny rail. Brownells sells flat based Picatinny stock. That way you can have a shorter cylinder length and a rail as long as you want.

Im not worried about changing a milt. rifle. As I said its been sporterized. Orig sights gone, orig stock gone, etc. But the reciever is orig. accept for the redfield reciever sight. The big pros to a scout scope are, Dont drill the reciever, Can still load with stripper clips, I want a scout rifle, that also is american classic style, has backup iron sights, scout rifles are cool, and I want a scout rifle.
